Chapter 24

Pranee stood there with her arms stretched out while one hand gripped the wand for dear life. Her task of lighting a candle without touching it was not as easy as she had hoped. She started to regret coming back to the riverside market and glared at the candle in front of her. Kiet on the other hand was hovering over her shoulder to watch her progress.

"You're not doing it right!" Kiet screamed.

"I'm trying! Give me a break!" Pranee shouted back. The hot sun was not being kind to her today and she could feel sweat coming out of every pore on her body.

"Try harder!"

"Why are you so mean to me?!"

"I'm trying to teach you!"

"Stop yelling at me!"

"I'm not yelling at you!"

"How come I only get a wand? Why can't a get a staff?"

"Focus!"

She let out a scream of frustration. "I give up!"

Kiet put a hand to his forehead and sighed.

"Okay, let's take a break. I hate standing on this thing anyway so I could take a break too." He gestured to his prosthetic leg.

"Ahhh okay."

"I brought some drinks," Chann said meekly.

They seemed to have been waiting there for a while as they had sweat on their face. They were holding two cups and had a bamboo hat on their head. Kiet looked to them and their expression softened immediately.

"Thank you," he smiled.

Chann mirrored his smile. "Let me know if you need anything else okay?"

"Okay."

Pranee watched them as her eyes darted back and forth between them as she quietly put the wand into her cloth bag. She could sense that if people weren't watching they would be far more intimate than what they're displaying at the moment.

"Do you want a drink, Pranee?" Chann looked over to Pranee and she raised a hand.

"It's okay, I'm good. Thank you for the offer." Pranee gave a polite smile and Chann reluctantly nodded.

Kiet stuck his staff into the ground and part of the earth rose to create a chair. Pranee watched with curiosity but she could feel her frustrations surface as she remembered her training.

"Shashi!" Kiet yelled. "Get over here and drink!"

"Huh? Shashi is here?" Pranee looked behind her yet she couldn't see any sign of the wizard.

"Wrong direction. They're over there," Kiet teased.

"Oh." Pranee could feel herself shrink in embarrassment as she saw Shashi walk up the dirt path to greet them.

"Mae, did you make lunch too?" Shashi commented.

"Who are you calling 'Mae'?" Kiet shot a glare at them but Pranee could tell by their tone that they were joking.

Shashi groaned. "I'm not doing this today."

"Huh? Something wrong?"

"No, I'm just not in the mood."

"Mmmmm?" Kiet leaned forward and attempted to look them directly in the eyes. Pranee observed the scene and could feel herself recoil slightly as she remembered their last encounter.
