Chapter 52

"So sorry about the scare yesterday! I didn't know we were having guests." The demon bowed with his hands clasped together.

"I-it's really no worry, Yukathon!" Pranee waved her hands frantically with a strained smile. "You just caught us off guard."

The two of them were standing outside the entrance for some time as others prepped the supplies for their travel. Pranee's brother and his guards were double-checking his prosthetics while Chann and Kiet talked to Wipa. The sky was still bright but the sun was inching closer to the horizon, ready to set at a moment's notice.

Shashi was designated to take care of Somchai because the little demon had taken a liking to the wizard. Somchai jumped onto their back with their tail wagging wildly and Shashi began to run around while making horse noises.

"I'm glad that Somchai could make some new friends." Yukathon smiled at the scene and had his hands on his hips. "We don't get many visitors here so he's always been bugging his mother for attention. She's not always up to his antics all the time since he's just full of energy."

"It can't be that easy to raise a child. Especially one with special abilities." Pranee laughed nervously.

"Some days, Anong can walk and carry Somchai with no problem but often she has to stay in her chair. I'm just grateful she agreed to raise Somchai even though he isn't hers."

"Well, I'm sure that she's views him as her child anyways. I can see the affection she has for him like any other mother."

"Ha," Yukathon sighed. "You know she actually called me crazy at first for suggesting all three of us to raise Somchai."

"Ah, did she?"

"Yeah, I did." Anong walked to the door with a cane in her hand and had a bitter smile.

"Do you need me to get the chair?" Yukathon asked Anong and she shook her head.

"Don't think you can tell the story without me. I don't get to tell it much." Anong wagged a finger at the demon. "So, I had asked Wipa to have her first child as I wanted to be her partner forever and I even offered her some money to show her I was serious."

The demon's tail flicked to the side and nervous laughter crept into his words. "And then she came to me. I was desperate to have a child and no one would even listen to me. They were too terrified by what I was rather than what I really am, I was even offering to fulfill wishes in exchange for a child."

"And that was when Wipa took your offer." Pranee thought over the situation described. It wasn't ideal to make a deal with a demon. If Wipa wasn't lucky, she might've ended up in a worse situation.

He nodded. "She convinced me that raising a demon child would be difficult with only two people and she actually knew someone else that also wanted a kid."

"I was furious at first since I agreed to a human child not a demon one." Anong's lips were pressed together tightly.

"Were you upset that... she made the child?" Pranee peered at Anong and tried to read her expression.

Anong let out a shaky breath. "She's committed to me but she also has a lot of love to share and I've understood that from the start. She just had more surprises than I expected."

Yukathon rubbed Anong's back affectionately. "I really thought I was going to raise the child alone but Somchai is just a big handful. I grew to appreciate his mother's and the work they put into him."

"You can appreciate it more if you didn't disappear suddenly every year. The kid gives me a wrinkle every day."

He laughed. "You know I don't have a choice in that."

Pranee observed the two before she looked back to Shashi. They were now sitting on the ground with Somchai and Somchai had his hands out to show Shashi. As Shashi interacted with the small child, an infectious smile was on their face and Pranee couldn't help but smile as well. The three of them were able to have a family and find happiness in it despite its unconventional structure. But it worked for them. Pranee wondered if she could have that as well.

"Okay!" Wipa called out. "We're getting ready to go. It's almost sunset and it's the only good time we can head out. We don't get there in time, then we'll have to wait another day. Let's get going!"
