“Hi, I’m YN, Mrs Potts’ new assistant, I’ve been here for a little while but we’ve never met. Just wanted to say hi. So, how much do you like it here ?”

It was the last one. The very last employee to scan. Finally you made it. You really wanted it to be done, since apparently *some people* could notice you were doing business in their head. The boss told you that you had nothing to fear, that the guy was a little weird but he wouldn’t hurt you, although the bruises on your neck begged to differ. She then added that he wouldn’t hurt you *anymore* and she was sorry it happened. And even if she wasn’t really the one that needed to apologize, you appreciated the fact that she did.

You said goodbye to whatshisname before going back. The boss was meeting someone outside of the building, so you just sat at your desk and started reading the dozens of new emails she had received since you last checked. Only 2 hours ago. Maybe she needed more than one assistant. Or maybe now you were done with the scanning you’d have more time to actually do your job.

Most emails were people asking for *subventions*. You had a whole file filled with their names, phone numbers and whatever they needed the money for. She was going through it everyday but never bothered asking you to call any of them back.

From what you had seen so far, she wasn’t doing anything new, just keeping the place from dying along with her husband. She probably needed more time. You didn’t even ask why Captain America came to see her a few days ago. First, you were too busy telling her you almost died and that you were not being paid enough to put your life in danger like that. Second, you kind of knew your place here, and it was definitely not asking what your boss was doing, why, and with who. She didn’t have any of her superhero friends here after that, so you guessed it was just to say hello.

Or maybe the world was about to end *again*. Funny.

She came back before you were done with the mail. In your defense, a lot of people needed money. Or a job. Or an interview. Those were easy, since she told you very clearly “No interview until further notice”. You were feeling bad for all the people that wanted a job, though. And everyday you were printing every single one, just in case. A whole folder full of very capable people. Some weren’t, but you were not very skilled either and you got in anyway.

“Good afternoon, Ma’am. How did it go ?”

“Good, thanks. Anything new on the last floors ?”

“Nothing. And everyone got scanned, Ma’am.”

“So you’re done ?”

“Yes Ma’am. All done with that.” She entered her office and you followed her with a bunch of papers in hand. She sat down and you put it all on her desk. “So, the lab people wanted to see you, none of them would tell me why so maybe you should go see them. The mayor’s office called, they need you to sign a few things, and a representative from the government came by since you apparently forgot to call them back. They left but they seemed -”

“I didn’t forget. But I’ll call them now, to be sure they know that.” She looked at you and then the door, and you understood it was time for you to leave.

You took your jacket and your coffee and decided to get out for a bit. The elevator was full and some of the people inside looked at you funny, so you took the stairs. You may have gotten some kind of a reputation in the building already. From what you’d heard, you were either weird or borderline crazy. You deserved it, though. Walking around asking people if they like their job and then just stare at them and not listening to a single word that actually came out of their mouth was not the way to look normal. You’d work on that now you knew no one was trying to sabotage the place. Or not. You just had to look normal enough so that no one would think you were doing anything wrong.
