When you finally arrived at the construction site, you parked your car as close to the building as possible, grabbed the two coffee cups and joined Sam under a small tent. You were surprisingly on time and yet, he was already there, waiting for you. He smiled when he saw you brought drinks and showed you a paper bag, filled with pastries.
“It’s going fast,” Sam said, looking at the men hurrying everywhere around you so early in the morning.
“Pepper is paying them an horrifying amount of money for them to go fast.” When everything settled down after the events of Madripoor, Pepper told everyone that she was rebuilding the Avengers compound. In just about 4 months, the foundations had already been laid and people were working day and night for her.
“I liked the old one.” Sam sighed and seemed to remember a time that didn’t exist anymore.
“Well, if you guys hadn’t blown it to the ground it would probably still be there.”
“I’m sorry a giant grape decided to attack us and destroy everything.” You smiled at him and shrugged. Sam gave you a concerned look. “She still hasn't come here herself, huh ?”
“Nope.” Ever since the start of the construction, Pepper never showed up. Either she was sending Happy or you, or she was having virtual conferences with the head of the building company. Even Julia, her assistant in high heels, had to come here once, not knowing what she had to do. “Happy was supposed to check the place, but he’s God knows where with his step-nephew.”
“Again ?”
“Something about the Netherlands. I’ve seen the news, and I really don’t want to get involved.”
“Whatever it is, the kid deserves it,” Sam stated. You both laughed at his remark and waved at a worker nearby, who quickly ran away the moment he saw you. “People are still afraid of you ?”
You smiled and rolled your eyes. “The whole world knows I can’t do anything outside of my workplace, Sam. I signed a freaking contract, for God’s sake !” Even after a few months, it was still a touchy subject. “And when I’m being a nice little consultant for you guys.”
“You have to understand them. None of us have a YN detector in our brain like Bucky.” You opened your mouth but Sam raised his finger. “I know you’re doing exactly what they want you to do, but other people don’t. It’ll take time for them to trust you. And I’m sorry to break it to you, but they may never do.”
“Yeah, I know that. And they don’t even know I controlled Captain America’s mind. I can’t imagine what it’d be like.”
“You’d be in a high security cell, a collar around your neck.” Your eyes almost popped off their sockets and Sam didn’t even laugh. He was dead serious about that collar thing. “Why do you think we didn’t tell anyone ?” He had a point. Mind reading was scaring people well enough, mind control would forever be a subject to keep to yourself.
“Is that why Wanda is not getting out of Strange’s house anymore ?” Sam nodded and you felt guilty about not going to see her more often. The government was not looking for her anymore, but you'd never seen her outside of the house. Now you knew why. “I’ll go see her soon. But I-”
“Still nothing on Vision ?” You shook your head, defeated. “I went through the files you sent me, you didn’t miss anything. Wherever he is, it’s not in there. Still no news from SWORD ?”
“Don’t get me started on them,” you said, already feeling angry and ready to punch a pack of cement with your bare hands. “I’ve been asking for everything they have on Vision for months, and I’m still waiting for them to at least pick up my calls.”
