At least this time you were there for the funeral.

Pepper told you her name was Charlotte. From what they knew about her, she volunteered for the injection 8 months ago and that was the last time her ex-husband heard from her and their daughter. Maggie was 6 years old. She hadn't seen her mother since the day she 'went with the doctor'.

But she was safe now. And after learning what happened to his ex-wife, he asked if he could talk to you. You agreed and Happy brought him to the lab a few days ago. You talked about how much Charlotte loved her daughter. He thanked you. Somewhere in all of this huge pile of shit, he thought that you gave her hope that Maggie could be saved.

But you didn't do anything. She had an opportunity, and she took it. Everything was her doing.

______

It still took you a few days to admit that Sam wasn't responsible for her death. Even if he had listened to Bruce's intern, there was no way he could have guessed where you were. And they already knew something was wrong. But you still didn't want to talk to him.

As for Bruce's intern, she came to see you once. You thanked her for her help, and she cried. She thought she could have been more persuasive, or she could have looked for something on her own. She resigned the day they discovered Charlotte had been sending the SOS. She couldn't take it, and you surely wouldn't be the one to blame her. She had been replaced with another girl since then.

Since you didn't really want to talk to anyone, you were just spending your days with people from security. Most of the time you were just following them around in their daily routine. You had to get your leg back to work. You were still limping, but it hurt a lot less already. Your hand and wrist were still in a cast, and Bruce told you it would stay that way for a while. At least the hole in your head was almost healed and the bruises... well, they would be gone eventually.

______

Then one day, instead of a random guy from security, Pepper showed up.

She wanted to walk with you. She told you that it was ok to be angry. And to be sad. And that no one was judging you. But she told you that Sam was at his worst. He felt like Charlotte's death was his fault, that he should have known about Sharon and he didn't want to see anyone else get injured because of him.

So you went to see him. He wasn't hard to find, everyone was talking about how he had basically moved in with Bruce. And Pepper was right. He looked awful. You had no idea how to tell him you were sorry for acting like an idiot for days, so you just sat next to him and talked about what was new.

After a few days of going through every single piece of information he had and pretending like you had never implied that anything was his fault, you finally decided to just go with 'sorry, I know you did everything you could, thank you for saving my life'.

It wasn't so hard, and it apparently made Sam feel a lot better.

______

Sharon had completely disappeared and it looked like she wasn't doing anything. Sam had nothing on her, except that she had possibly been selling government's informations. The top secret kind. Charlotte told you that they were just a distraction. But now the distraction was over, and nothing was happening.

______

So you started to train again. Charlotte had a control over her power that you never had. You were spending your days training with Bruce until your head hurt.

Bucky started teaching you morse code. You were far from good, but you knew how to ask for help with your new transmitter. This one was smaller, and Bruce set it to recognize any repetitive pattern. Bucky figured out that you could just link a letter to a whole sentence, so he started making a list of things that might be useful.
