It felt weird coming back to work, even if you only left for less than a month and technically, you didn't really work here anymore. Everything looked exactly the same.
Everything except for Lucy's desk. Some guy was sitting in her chair. You stopped in the middle of the lobby, unable to take your eyes off of him. Even if your head hurt like crazy, you would never let him go without a scan. But as you suspected, he was completely uninteresting. Thinking about his boyfriend and if they should take a dog or a cat, or maybe a turtle because turtles are cute.
And how lucky he had been to get a job here.
"YN, you good ?" Sam was standing ahead of you, surely waiting for you to follow him. You nodded and let him do what he had to do. He went straight to Lucy's desk. Obviously. "Hey, it's ok she's with me." The other guy said it was fine and smiled at you, but you decided to ignore him. Sam noticed it and shook his head before entering the elevator. "He's nice." You couldn't care less. "His name is-"
"I don't care, Sam. Lucy was nice too."
The doors opened and you saw Bruce already waiting for you. You ran to hug him, it was probably the happiest you had ever been to see anyone in your life.
"Hey, YN !" You gasped when he lifted you off the ground. "Welcome back !" He put you down and touched the device on your head. "I have to say, you scared me a little earlier. The alarm went on for a while."
"Well, my head hurts, that's for sure. And as you can see, I'll need to change because my nose bled all over my shirt. But I think I managed to access some memories. I'm not sure, but it felt different."
"That's fantastic !" He screamed and you started laughing. He was always so enthusiastic about the smallest progress. "Did you get anything ?" You nodded. "Brilliant ! Sam owes me money now."
"Did he bet that I wouldn't succeed with everyone ?" Bruce nodded and you gave Sam the deadliest stare you could pull off. "Sorry Bruce, but I'm collecting all the money."
"Fair enough." He took you to your brain's room. There were two girls inside, looking very closely at the screens. "Take a break girls, I've got this." They pointed at you with shocked faces while they were leaving. "They're helping me monitor your brain activity. I need to sleep sometimes and we wanted to make sure you were fine."
"They probably had a lot of fun the past two weeks." You remembered how much your brain had been all over the place since you heard about the trip to Canada.
"We called Clint everyday to make sure he wasn't torturing you. He said you were fine, just sad." Maybe when this would be over you'd go back there and murder Clint. Run him over with his precious truck.
"Right. I was perfectly fine. Just going nuts. He told me when they were leaving, and nothing else for two weeks, Bruce. Two. Weeks !" There was a loud beep and one of the screens turned red. "It's ok. I'm fine." You took a deep breath and the beeping sound stopped.
"You're getting better at this too, I see. That's great. Now tell me," He pulled a chair for you to sit on. "How did you manage to get anything that the kid wasn't actively thinking about?"
"Listen to me very carefully, Bruce. He is a lot of things, but he's not a kid. He enjoys pain. Not only inflicting it on others, but his own too. The feelings I got when I went in there... Bruce, I threw up. Twice." He looked at you like he never did before. He was not excited, he was not worried, he was absolutely terrified. Not because of what you saw in Juan's head, but because he was probably thinking about what monstrosities could be found in the depths of other people's brains. People worse than Juan. If that could ever be. "So that was the awful part. Now for the good stuff." He took his pen and waited for you to talk. "I just need to stop jumping from one brain to another and just focus on one."
