Happy put you on lobby duty for the day, and even if it meant a lot of chatting with Lucy, it also meant a lot of pointless scanning. And today was not as entertaining as you had hoped.
The weirdest thing you had found was a guy thinking about random numbers. It turned out those were just his lucky lottery numbers. And as the day went by, you had started to get offended by the amount of people that were surprised that you were a part of security. Granted, you didn’t look like you belonged there, but you were still more useful than half of them. Maybe. Probably not, actually.
“So,” Lucy hung up her phone and looked at you. “Drinks after work ?”
“I wish.” You sighed heavily. “Sam got someone and he needs me to read their mind.”
“That’s so cool !” You had no idea if you were allowed to talk to her about any of it, but she was the closest thing you had to a friend. And she promised to keep her mouth shut. Plus, you knew for a fact that she had no intention of telling anyone about any of it.
“It’s really not.” You said, shaking your head. “ He’s gonna make me sit in a room all by myself, and I’ll just be a human lie-detector. Most of the time it’s useless anyway because none of them think about anything helpful.”
“You’re doing a little bit more than a lie-detector, YN.” That was why you told her everything. She was the most supportive person you had ever met. “And you get to hang out with the Avengers. That’s awesome.”
“Did you miss the part where I’m all alone in a room ? The only person I’m hanging out with is myself.” She laughed and directed her attention to the doors.
“Looks like your driver’s here.” You turned around when you saw her smile and wave at someone. Bucky was walking towards the two of you. You looked at your watch. You still had 45 minutes of work ahead of you.
“What are you doing here ? Sam said he’d pick me up after work. In like, nearly an hour.”
“Hi Lucy.” She was probably about to faint now. “Hello to you too, YN. Banner wanted to see me. Please get out.”
“Mandatory scanning. You’re not above the rules, sir.” You tried to look innocent but you ended up laughing. “Why?”
“Apparently someone told him that I know when you… ” He paused and glanced at Lucy.
“It’s fine, she knows.” He stared at you, and you could tell he was not pleased. “Hey. She’s my friend.” You jumped from the desk and went next to him. “Let’s go, then.”
“You’re not coming. You’re working.”
“I am allowed to take part in any conversation regarding my brain.” He rolled his eyes and followed you in the elevator.
When the doors opened again, Bruce was already waiting for him. He looked at the both of you and opened the door of your room. Technically it wasn’t yours, but since there was data from your brain on every screen, you had decided to claim it. You sat in front of the screen where the two lines were still dancing and started your contemplation. Only to be interrupted by Bruce.
“YN, I suppose you’ll be staying with us ?”
“Yep.” They sat at a desk on the other side of the room, and you decided to leave your seat to go with them. Bruce was already ready to take notes.
“So, James.” He started. “How do you feel when YN is in your head ?”
“I don’t like it.” Bruce seemed amused by his answer.
“Well, thank you, but it wasn’t what I meant. How do you notice it ?”
“I just know something is happening.”
