---

we're the whispers in the
dark
when the night is
gone
and the good girls have
gone to sleep
and the bad girls have
gone to hell
or most of them at least
except two
who are up late
putting each other's
makeup on
adjusting silk dresses
that no one else will
see

we're the tallies on the
wall
that count the days
that count the years
growing older
we're always growing
older
it shows in the
lines on our faces
it shows in the
creases on our souls
but maybe that just means
they've been
well-worn
well-used
well-loved

we're the nebulas that
glimmer
shimmer
glow
when the night falls over the
world
like a blanket
and stars are born

we're the shining necklaces
that we like to share
as a mockery
of the knights in armor
that we don't need
to save us
from our sins
because we chase the
vices
and we left behind virtue
long ago

we're two people struggling to
stay afloat
in a world determined to
drown us
and i press my lips to
yours
not to spite the gods above
but to breathe a little air
into your lungs
so that you may survive
this flood
for one more night.
