looking

that last a beat too long
eye contact
that sends electricity
through our veins
and fire
through our souls
char us so that we might
heal together
give me
featherlight maybes
oaths that are
fleeting
burdens that float away
on the breeze
like colorful scarves
hand me promises
made of pearl necklaces
and pray that i don't ask for
diamonds
give me
gentlemanly grace
and calloused fingertips
brushing everywhere
that the sunlight touches
because you're
jealous
of the golden
because you love me
that much
give me
the headiness of
desire
the swirl of silver
in champagne glasses
in red wine
give me intoxication
even if i don't ask for it
i'd rather forget our
sweet-apple sorrows
and
honeycomb aftertastes
give me
the peace that i find
standing beside you
even if it's on your
left side
rather than your right
and even if
the rose
the cake
the dark blue decorations
were picked out by
somebody else
give me
moments
give me
seconds
give me
everything you have
even if you take it back
because i could
never be yours
and you could
never be mine
but i would die by my own
hand
for the
glory
of pretending—
just for a little while.
