then
what it would
do to me
to see you
it was the feeling of
my heart
ripped from my chest
my soul
torn from my body
while i was demanded
by the gods
by the men
by oaths of
vengeance and
honor and
duty
to remain standing
and if you had
known
then
what it would
do to me
you should have
reached out
with ghostly hands
touched them to my
eyes
to my jaw
to my chin
you might have
turned my gaze away
though that is a
foolish thought
because i
threw myself upon you
with animal grace
and animal pain
you must not have
known
then
what it would
do to me
or maybe there was
simply nothing
that you could
do for it
i was always the
fighting one
and you were always the
gentle one
the one to pull
arrow from flesh
to mend hurts
not put them there
you could not have
held me back
in life
and you - your specter -
could not have
held me back
in death
even if you had tried
you couldn't have
known
then
what it would
do to me
because if you had
known
then you would have
stayed with me
you would have
breathed salt air
into your lungs
and pressed your
hands
into my body
you would not have
lain there
cold
icy
as i wept
you will never
know
then
what it
did to me
how it robbed me of
life
but that i welcomed
the thief
how i had hoped
to be struck down
so that i might
return to you
with my sorries
and my pain
so that i might
return to you
and feel your
fingers
on my cheeks
i will not let you
know
then
of the howls that
broke free
low in my throat
like a mourning dog
like a broken man
i will keep them
from you
the one secret
to exist between us
because you will
never forgive yourself
if you knew
what your blood
in the dusty sand
did
how it clenched an
armored fist
around my heart and
squeezed.
