Chapter 43 - Hitting close to home

It's the next morning and Harper is on shift. She has tried to avoid Kelly all morning. She acts all tough when she's around Kelly but really this is killing her inside. She loads the kids into the car and drives them to school. She then drives to the firehouse
"Morning" Dawson says catching up with her in the driveway
"Hey Gabby" Harper replies looking down at the ground
"What did he do?" Dawson asks stopping Harper from walking anymore
"I-I can't do this anymore Dawson! I'm so tired! I'm so fucking tired!" Harper replies as the tears roll down her face
"But you don't want to leave him because of the kids?" Dawson asks as she smiles at Harper
"I don't know if I can fix this" Harper replies
"Truck 81, Sqaud 3, Ambulance 61, Engine 51, House Fire, One Southland street" The intercom echoes throughout the firehouse
Harper wipes her tears and jumps into the truck. They arrive on scene to discover a house up in flames. Harper jumps out and walks over to the officer commanding the scene
"Just a heads up. There's a man with a gun in there" The officer says as Harper sighs
She turns around to see everyone suiting up
"Hey!" Harper yells as everyone turns to look at her
"Your not all going in there! I'm only sending the captains in!" Harper shouts
"What?" Herrmann says
"Why?" Capp adds
"Because I said so! Now sit your asses down!"Harper shouts as everyone gets the hint to shut up
Harper suits up along with Kelly and Casey. They then run in. Harper takes the top floor, Kelly the middle and Casey the bottom. Harper discovers the man standing with a gun in hand with tears streaming down his face.
"She's gone! I have nothing to live for!" The man shouts sensing that someone is standing behind him
"Who's gone?" Harper asks as Casey and Kelly stand within a hearing radius
"My wife! That's it! The divorce papers are signed!" The man yells as he holds the gun up to his head
"Hey! Put the gun down! I get it okay? I know what it's like to feel like you would be better off not here! You think that your family are going to have less things to worry about! That they have more money to spend! Or the person you were dragging down can finally break free and move on! But none of that's true okay?" Harper says as she calmly walks towards the man
"I still don't deserve it!" The man shouts as he shoots but Harper moves the gun away causing it to shoot the wall
Harper grabs him and takes him out. Engine get water on the blaze and the man is taken into custody. They all then head back to the firehouse
"Everything okay Bailey?" Capp asks as they all sit in the common room
"Everything's great why?" Harper asks holding back the tears from the last call
"It's just want you said to the guy" Casey adds
"Your radio was on Harper" Herrmann states
"Guys that's what a negotiator does! They do whatever they can to get inside a persons head! All of that was acting! I was lying!" Harper replies clearly lying
"If your sure" Casey says as Harper looks at Kelly with tears in his eyes
Harper tires to make eye contact but he just looks away which breaks Harper's heart. Why can her husband not look at her anymore? Has she actually lost him this time? They were all the questions bouncing around her head....
