Chapter 19- "How about we call her cheeseball?"
SCARLETT POV
I lick my lips greedily while I devour the tasty waffles Hazel made. Matt, who's sitting right in front of me, has adopted a much more civilized way of eating to his heart's content. Unlike me, he is actually attempting to use cutlery.
Ah well, may be boys tend to behave more like humans and less like gorillas in front of their girlfriends... at any rate, that would definitely explain how Adrian doesn't see the caveman in Ricky like the rest of us do!
Hazel is sitting cross-legged on the kitchen counter, her auburn hair now tied back in a high ponytail. She's changed into a pair of turquoise hued jeans and a crop top that I presume is from Forever 21. But, honestly speaking, I fail to tell the difference between clothes brought from the flea market and branded apparel. All the same, I have enough fashion sense to make out that my sister's looking really hot.
I walk up to her and climb on the shelf next to her. I have no idea why...but suddenly, all I want to do is pull my sister into a bear hug. Today, I can finally see what I've conveniently chosen to ignore for as long as I can remember: no matter how messed up life may be, there's always room for sisters.
Now, I know that Hazel and I haven't exactly been best friends all through these years but I also can deny the fact that these times have brought us closer. She comforted me a few days ago, after a particularly unpleasant conversation with my parents. I had consoled her a week or two ago when she had gotten into a fight of sorts with Matt. It's easy to predict this mutual respect and care is coming from and whether it will last but, I sure as hell hope it's here to stay.
I turn a little to my left, throw my arms around Hazel and envelope her into a shoulder-blade squeezing, bone crushing hug. She looks a tad bit surprised but returns the gesture.
"I love you, Hazel!" I say. And I mean it. Hazel, no matter how things turn out between us, is always going to be one of the few people I could do anything for. Literally anything.
"Awww! I love you too, you little munchkin!" she replies, her lips curved upwards in a teasing smile.
I shout, "I'm not short anymore! I'm almost as tall as you now, in case you forgot!" I reply
She grins, "Ah...yes! That's right. Uh, well....I cannot do without having a nickname for you! So,uh, you tell me. What could we call you?" she asks, her eyebrows rose upwards.
"Um....." I begin, but I'm interrupted by the sound of Matt clearing his throat. He's cleared the table, changed and is standing at the door, looking at my little sister expectantly.
"How about we call her cheeseball?" he asks, winking at me. Hazel jumps up at the idea, ruffles my hair and sprints across the room. She puts on her sneakers.
As she laces her Chuck Taylor, I ask "Why Cheesabll?" which is a totally valid question, if I'm to be called names, I have the rights to know the reason know, don't I?
"Uh... well Cheeseball because you're sweet, little sentimental person, oh and you're hella cheesy when you want to be!" Hazel replies with a smirk.
I go red in the cheeks. And then something hits me: I never told Hazel about any chats I've had with Nathan. And Nathan's like the only person besides Jonathan that I've ever been cheesy with. Since Hazel doesn't know about Jonathan and she's met Nathan like twice, my bet is left my Facebook account logged in.
"You guys read my chats! You evil, evil people!" I fake scream. Inwardly, although I have no idea why, I am not mad at her at all. Hazel shrugs, as if she doesn't seem to find anything wrong with invading her sister's privacy. Matt grins, "Scarlett, on any other day, I'd be glad to hear you sing praises of me and my apparently evil girlfriend. Today, however.... We need to leave!"
