MY TEACHER USED to say that no matter what instrument or song you choose to play, you should play it with love, with passion, with sincerity. When in doubt, you should play from the heart.

Too bad mine was broken.

But that didn't matter. Not when I couldn't hear anything over this damned ticking, anyway.

The ticking was deafening. Or at least, it was within the suffocating confines of my mind.

Eyeing the clock on the opposite wall, I couldn't exactly hear the steady monotonous ticking over the music, but I liked to think it was synchronised with my erratic heartbeat. Surely then, time would pass faster, and the moment Mrs Oikawa and Takeru returned would draw closer.

But for now, it was simply me and an old love song I couldn't quite understand no matter how high I turned the volume

But for now, it was simply me and an old love song I couldn't quite understand no matter how high I turned the volume.

Throughout my entire life, I had grown accustomed to dancing on my own. I'd spent many days and evenings alone, moving to hypnotising melodies only I could hear, lyrics hummed under my breath and tinny tunes blasting from my phone. In my bedroom, tiny kitchens and the empty cafe late at night; music helped fill the silence, drown out the worries of life that often plagued my thoughts. But not even the crackling notes of a foreign love song could mask the anxiety that rose when I heard the telltale creak of footsteps down the stairs. The calm that had eventually settled over my cracked heart dissipated after a single note. If I were an animal, my hackles surely would have been raised.

Freezing mid-spin, I glanced over at the small radio on the kitchen bench, silently wishing I had turned the volume up higher. It had been difficult to decide upon the right setting on the dial - soft enough to not awaken the boy upstairs, but loud enough for me to forget about his existence.
