'SHOULD I BE adding stalker next to convenience store vandal in your grand list of accolades, ace?' I huffed, my obvious annoyance breaking the silence that had settled between us.

'Guess I shouldn't be surprised that 'hero' and 'angel' is on yours,' Futakuchi shot back, his footsteps a few steps behind but still in sync with mine. We were a block away from the store already, but I still hadn't been able to shake him off.

'You know me, saving the world one step at a time.'

In the soft tranquility of midnight, our steps were painfully loud against the pavement of the worn sidewalk. With each quick step I took, the thin soles of my scuffed sneakers scraped along the uneven concrete.

'I'd believe that.'

I scoffed in reply.

Futakuchi shrugged nonchalantly, 'If there's anyone that could change the world, it's probably you. I mean, why not you?'

I stopped walking, turning around to stare at him unashamedly. That strange sense of déjà vu washed over me again. Where had I heard that before?

'That was awfully perspicacious of you,' I remarked dryly. I was well aware that he was being sweet, making sure I was safe and whatnot, but quite frankly my teeth were already in a state of decay. I did not need sweetness. I was not in the mood for company tonight - not anymore.

'Don't look at me like I'm a philistine,' he mumbled, pulling his cap further forward to cover his eyes. What a shock - turns out cocky schoolboys can get flustered after all.

I smiled in amazement, taken back. 'I'm impressed you know that word.'

Instead of being insulted as I had expected, Futakuchi shared my grin, 'I seem to be surprising you a lot tonight. Not bad for a younger guy, huh?'

I laughed and gestured for him to lean in closer, before whispering, 'I'll let you in on a secret - it ain't hard to pleasantly surprise a girl with low expectations.'

But then he baffled me once again - instead of being offended, his brow furrowed in worry. 'Why does a girl like you have such low expectations?'

You can't be disappointed or have your ideals shattered if they're low to begin with - that was my first mistake. I hesitated a second before biting back, 'Like me? As far as I'm concerned, I'm just like any other girl.'

'I don't know any girls our age that work as hard as you do. You're always fluttering around, doing something, helping someone.'

He sounded just like another one of my underclassmen, but I couldn't put my finger on who.
