"SO WHEN ARE you planning on coming back home, Jungkook? I think you've spent enough time doing as you wished, don't you think?" Mr. Jeon broke the comfortable silence as everyone looked towards the end of the table, momentarily getting distracted by the disruptive tone of the badly timed question.

The dinner—supposedly hosted for celebrating Jung Min's recovery—had barely even started with everyone being just in the middle of finishing the first course.

And to make things worse, the way the question had been intoned wasn't the most occasion appropriate either, inadvertently revealing more than just a hint of the sourness that seemed to linger between Jungkook and Mr. Jeon.

It was clear from the way Jungkook's jaw clenched that he was in no mood to answer his father's question but he held back from saying anything, I assumed for his sister's sake, who was now looking between the two with a distressed expression.

"Appa please," she said softly, her wide, concerned eyes flickering to her father. "You promised to not bring this up tonight."

The man's mouth however remained drawn into a stern, unyielding line as he barely acknowledged Jung Min's whispered words and continued to look at Jungkook expectantly, awaiting his answer. Despite the number of people present—which included Taehyung sunbae, Jin sunbae and even Seok Mi, his gaze on his son was unwavering as he refused to relent.

And while I understood that none of the three was exactly unaware of the problems plaguing his relationship with his son, I was still surprised that he chose to continue without giving any consideration to my presence. Or Jung Min.

Because perhaps he did not care about what I thought. I could justify that. Not everyone believed in keeping up appearances for the sake of keeping up appearances. But how could he not see how much he was disturbing his own daughter by putting Jungkook in a spot in front of everyone like this?

As close as the two were, there was no way she couldn't see her brother restraining himself. I could tell that she could. I could also tell that this was the one thing she'd desperately wished wouldn't happen on the night she was supposed to come back to her family.

However, as Mr. Jeon refused to let it go and the tense silence between the father and son stretched, it was only expected for everyone sitting at the table to awkwardly glance at the man and then amongst themselves, their expressions morphing into varying degrees of unease, confusion and discomfort as they chewed hesitantly.

Even Seok Mi seemed to know better than to jump into the conversation unasked this time around and I wondered just how much she knew to be able to go against her base instinct of being the intrusive busybody that she usually was.

Across me, Jungkook set down his fork with a soft clank before calmly turning to his father. "I have no such plans, father." He answered with a faint, derisive smile, his voice even as he looked Mr. Jeon straight in the eye. "We both know that our definitions of 'enough time' hardly match and at this point, I intend to live my life in sync with mine."
