Sarah always knew her endgame goal was to get away from home. She always wanted a change of scenery, to escape the life she made here and be whoever she decided somewhere else. Ever since she'd started freshman year, a scholarship a few hours away had been in her eye line. A boarding school for high school students with high academic scores, ones that made you stop and say "wow" type of students.
So, that's exactly what she did. She wanted them to say "wow" when seeing her outstanding scores, perfect attendance record, and the way she used her spare time to help other kids pass their classes. No one saw through her act until she met Vance Hopper, no one had even seen who Sarah was deep down until Vance Hopper. Some might say he was the downfall of Sarah Barns, that he'd ruined her life.
Maybe that was true, maybe his existence made her better but his disappearance is what ruined her. Maybe it was all just town gossip and Vance had been the best part of Sarah's life, even after the tragedy. No one really knew aside Sarah, or maybe she didn't know either. Perhaps Sarah wasn't sure if meeting Vance Hopper, letting him consume her entire life and fall head over heels for him, was a good idea. Maybe she regretting meeting him to avoid the pain that would follow when she discovered what happened, or maybe it was all worth it in the end because of the time they shared together before The Grabber took everything from her.
Sarah didn't know the answer to that, she probably never would. All she did know was that she'd known what life was like before Vance Hopper, she knew what life was like during Vance Hopper, but she never imagined what life was like after Vance Hopper.
things that i've changed from the OG Black Phone plot for the sake of this story: vance was never held back two years. bruce is the same age as vance and sarah.

ARE WE READY TO FUCKING SOB?? i'm sure all of you know by now but the grabber is based off a IRL killer, there's a documentary about him on netflix as well. so just to make things clear, this book is NOT romanticizing the film in any way. the entire reason this book was made is to show how traumatic and painful it can be to loose someone or multiple people.
