The weather was nice today. It was the beginning of autumn, so it was warm and sunny for most of the day, but even so, when you looked out your windows the sky seemed greyer than usual. There were a couple of clouds scattered over the horizon, but otherwise, everything was still perfectly calm as he sat on the bench in Bongmu Park and gazed at the blue water which was spread in front of him.
His arms were crossed over his chest as if he was trying to protect himself from something dangerous, but no, he didn't seem scared at all. He more looked like he was in pain, a lot of emotions flashing through his eyes every now and then. But that wasn't necessarily surprising, since everyone felt sad sometimes, especially when they lost someone dear. Taehyun knew exactly what kind of feeling he had right now; the kind where tears threatened to fall from your eyes, and you wanted nothing more than to disappear and never come back. He knew, because he had felt the same way, a lot of times before in fact, but this was the worst he had ever experienced.
People walked by, laughing and talking loudly, and their voices sounded just like the annoying buzzing noise he used to hear when he was in school. A soft breeze caressed Taehyun's red strands of hair while they brushed against his face. His eyes remained fixed on the calm surface of the lake, looking like they were watching the faint waves playfully as they flowed across the water. And it almost reminded him of the past, a happy time in his life. The happiest time in his life. The moment before it all ended.
"Hey," someone said from beside him, making him jump a little in his seat.
Taehyun wiped his eyes swiftly, not wanting a stranger to see his tears and take pity on him. He turned around to fix his eyes on the newcomer, seeing a young man who should have been around his age, standing at his bench and looking at him with something sparkling in his eyes.
"Can I take a seat here?"
Taehyun felt a little annoyed. "As if he couldn't sit somewhere else," he thought grumpily. He glanced up at him, giving him an unimpressed stare before scooting aside to give him some space and nodding his head in response.
The stranger seated himself beside him with a bright smile and immediately stretched his long legs in front of him. He stared into Taehyun's green orbs, which weren't even sparing a glance at him, waiting for something – anything really – that would tell him the reason why he was sitting there all alone, but Taehyun simply remained silent.
"Are you okay?" He finally asked when it became obvious that the other wasn't going to say anything at all.
Taehyun looked up again, meeting his gaze. He bit down on his lip before whispering, "Yeah." It came out sounding a bit shaky, which made him want to turn away, but he held himself firm.
The last thing he needed was for a stranger to get the wrong idea and think he was weird. Although, maybe he was being rude.
"Are you sure? I saw you crying earlier," the stranger said, tilting his head to one side as a way to show that he genuinely cared about Taehyun's wellbeing.
