Rings of smoke rose into the morning air, wisping in spirals into the sky. They made a dark contrast to the brilliant blue that hung over the city. It was like a painting, a vision sent from heaven, Taehyun thought, as he watched Yeonjun from the porch, who was lying on the grass with his arm tucked under his head as he smoked a cigarette and let the breeze blow through his hair, strands dancing around his face while Taehyun simply kept gazing at him. The light reflected off his skin and danced across Yeonjun's body, lighting up his features like a star.
His cheeks were rosy, his eyes closed, and his features relaxed, almost angelic. And so, he was breathtaking, Taehyun thought. He had never seen someone look more beautiful than the man currently curled on the lawn before him. As he continued staring, a gentle breeze rustled Yeonjun's hair, causing the ends to dance about wildly. It looked messy but so did Yeonjun himself. And it was only when another wave of smoke drifted over Yeonjun's head that the latter finally caught sight of him from the corner of his eye.
Taehyun's expression was unreadable. Yeonjun couldn't tell whether it was a pleasant or displeasing one, but there was nothing wrong in appreciating the view, so he sat up and puffed out some smoke while staring Taehyun straight in the eyes in which a hostile challenge had settled. He held the stare until Taehyun averted his gaze first, however, he didn't run away even though he didn't accept their game of chess.
"What are you doing here?" Yeonjun asked once he'd finished puffing and blowing the smoke away, his voice coming out husky as he leaned forward on his knees.
Taehyun didn't answer but instead took his feet off the porch and walked down the stairs until he stood in front of Yeonjun who was staring up at him with curiosity dancing in his eyes. "Can I have one?"
Yeonjun kept staring at him for a moment, then snapped out of his daze and grabbed the packet of cigarettes from the ground and opened it for Taehyun, handing him a single cigarette and taking another one for himself as the younger sat beside him on the grass.
Yeonjun grabbed the lighter, his eyes sharply observing Taehyun's features as he flicked the lighter, watching the ash fall from the end to the ground.
As he watched Taehyun take a drag and blow the smoke out slowly, his mind flashed back to their teenage years when they first had a taste of nicotine, their minds filled with childish fantasies about life outside the confines of their families.
He remembered how excitedly he would watch Taehyun smoke, trying not to make a sound while he held the cigarette between his two fingers and breathed in deeply before holding his breath for a few seconds. They hadn't done it many times though, back then they only used to smoke when they were together but after losing all the connections with the boy, Yeonjun got kind of addicted to cigarettes as they were one of the best ways to cope with stress and sadness. It was also the only way he could forget that everything about Taehyun hurt him and left him feeling cold and numb behind.
