The air in the hospital was thick with grief and despair. In a small room, in a quiet corner of the third floor, a boy lay with his hands curled into fists in his hair, face downcast. Tears weren't drying on his face, they never had dried. They were pouring out instead, streaming from his eyes to the floor below him. Yeonjun watched him with sad and tearful eyes as the boy mourned his friend. He was filled with so much sadness and pain that he wondered why anyone could feel that much. Maybe he didn't have the best relationship with Soobin, but the latter was still too young to die just like that. No one deserved to die like that, in fear and loneliness, not even a bastard like Soobin.
"How did they find him?" Yeonjun asked after a while, voice hoarse with emotion but also with the heaviness of grief. The silence was deafening for him.
"The owner of the house was the one who found him," Huening Kai said in such a weak and soft tone, Yeonjun could barely hear it. The boy wouldn't even look at him. He just couldn't stop rocking his body back and forth as if he could numb the pain like that. "When she visited the house, she noticed that the basement door was covered with a big shelf as if someone had moved it there on purpose to hide the door..."
Tears fell from the boy's grieving eyes. It broke Yeonjun's heart to see another person in such a state.
"... So she went into the basement," the younger said, and now tears were freely streaming down his cheeks. He was on the verge of breaking down once more. "And she found him there and called the police immediately."
Yeonjun felt his heart squeeze painfully. For a moment, he thought he could hear his own blood rushing loudly against his ears. The boy's sobs echoed through the silent hallway, sounding louder than any scream from a dying man.
"But it's been just two days since he passed away, hasn't it?" Yeonjun asked desperately, trying his hardest to keep his emotions in check.
"The doctors said that he must have been in a coma for weeks," Huening Kai choked out between his sobs. His voice was shaking terribly. It hurt too much for him to listen to them.
He felt helplessness and guilt wash over him. He couldn't help but feel like it was his fault even though he had done nothing at all. Maybe if he had been a little more eager to find him he'd be alive now instead of in such a sorry situation. If he had just paid more attention then maybe everything would've been alright, maybe he would've found Soobin sooner and prevented his death.
"Is Beomgyu hyung the one who did this?" Huening Kai looked up towards Yeonjun, a question burning deep inside him. It stung so much to think that his beloved could be the murderer of his friend. "Tell me, is he?"
Yeonjun felt like swallowing his tongue at the sight of his face twisted with desperation and heartbreak. He wanted to cry along with the younger. He knew what being devastated really felt like. He had also gone through that feeling and he didn't want anyone else to experience that. However, there he was witnessing the ruthless consequence of death in front of his eyes.
