ACT FOUR

INT. MEDICAL OFFICE - DOWNTOWN LA - MORNING
Darnell sits across from Dr. Spears.
DR. SPEARS
In your first session, we talked about your fath- Biological dad.
(off Darnell's nod)
Tell me more about your relationship with him.
DARNELL
(smirks)
It was non-existent.
DR. SPEARS
So, he wasn't around at all.
DARNELL
No... He'd pop up unexpectedly. To simply cause chaos... Senior and my mom had a tumultuous relationship.
DR. SPEARS
Tumultuous? Care to elaborate?
Uncomfortable, Darnell starts to shift in his seat. Dr. Spears takes notes.
DARNELL
(a beat)
Senior was married... When his wife found out she told his superiors about his drug use... So, he had a tarnished career and no wife. He lost everything and in his eyes, my mom was to blame... And because of that, he made her life a living hell. Our lives... Stalked her... She couldn't really date... He didn't want her but didn't want anyone else to have her either.
DR. SPEARS
So, there was abuse?
(off Darnell's nod)
Was he ever violent towards you?
DARNELL
(rubs hands together)
Yeah... But my mama got the brunt of it. Especially when we weren't around. He was always more violent.
Darnell rubs the back of his neck.
DR. SPEARS
What about DeShawn? Was Senior ever violent towards your brother?
Darnell clenches his fists.
DARNELL
NO. Senior never touched DeShawn. I made sure of it.
Dr. Spears observes Darnell and keeps jotting notes.
DR. SPEARS
(sad smile)
So, you were his protector?
DARNELL
I always protected DeShawn... Always.
(saddened look)
Well, until...
DR. SPEARS
Until? What happened to--
DARNELL
I think this is a good place to stop... I've had enough for today.
Before Dr. Spears can respond Darnell darts up and leaves.
INT. BAKER HOUSE - KITCHEN / LIVING ROOM - AFTERNOON
Layla scrolls through her phone and checks her emails and appointments for the day. A beat. The FRONT DOOR CLOSES and Jordan enters and wraps his arms around her. She tenses up.
