Parshuram went to Kurukshetra, while Bhishm went to the city and told Satyavati everything. He then performed the propitiatory rites and was blessed by his mother.

The brahmanas pronounced sacred words of benediction as Bhishm mounted a beautiful and silver chariot, yoked to white horses. It had been constructed well and had been prepared well. It was strewn with the hides of tigers and loaded with great weapons and every kind of implement.

It was driven by a brave charioteer born in a noble lineage, skilled in the knowledge of horses, who had often witnessed Gangeya's deeds.

Bhishm was wearing beautiful and white armour and carried a white bow. A white umbrella was held aloft his head and white whisks were brandished. Bhishm was attired in white. His headgear was white, and so were all his ornaments.

Applauded by the benedictions of victory, Bhishm left the city. Goaded by the charioteer, the horses, with the speed of the mind and the wind, swiftly bore him to the supreme field of battle.

Both of them were now in front of each other, wishing to give a display of their valour.

Bhishm grasped his conch shell and began to blow in it. All the brahmanas, the ascetics who lived in the forest, the gods and the masses of rishis assembled to witness the divine battle.

Celestial garlands manifested themselves repeatedly. Divine musical instruments sounded. There was the rumbling of masses of clouds. All the ascetics who followed Bhargava surrounded the field of battle as witnesses.

Ganga, the one who desires welfare of all beings, manifested herself in front of Bhishm.

"Gangadatta, yeh tum kya karne jaa rahe ho ? Brahman ke virudh aisa hatti vyavhar nahi karna chahiye. Jamdagneya se mai vinti karlungi ki woh tumse yudh na kare. Kya tum nahi jaante ki Parshuram ki shakti Mahadev ke bhaati hai ? Toh fir yeh yudh kyu kar rahe ho ?" Ganga censured her son.

Bhishm joined his hands in salutations in front of her, he then told her everything that had transpired at the svayamvar. He also told her how he had tried to obtain Parshuram's favours earlier and about Amba's love for Shalva.

The great river goddess then went to Parshuram and for the sake of her son, she sought to pacify him.

"Bhagwan, Bhishm aapka shishya hai. Usse yudh na kare." She begged.

"Tumne Bhishm ko rokna chahiye, Devi. Mai toh yaha khada hu kyuki Bhishm meri aagya ka palan nahi kar raha." Parshuram said.

Out of affection towards her son, Ganga then returned to Bhishm. But his eyes were red with anger and he did not pay heed to her words.

"Yudh karo Bhishm !" Parshuram challenged.

Bhishm laughed, "Aap bhoomi par khade hai, aur mai rath par baitha hu. Aise mai aapse yudh nahi karunga. Mahabahu Parshuram ! Kisi rath par sawaar ho jayiye aur kavach pehen lijiye, yadi mujhse yudh karna hai toh."

"Yeh prithvi meri rath hai, 4 ved mere ashwa, vayu mera saarthi hai, aur Ved-mata Gayatri, Savitri aur Saraswati mere kavach. Inn sabse avrut aur sanrakhit ho, mai yudhbhoomi mei yudh karunga." Parshuram smiled.

And while speaking in this way, he covered Bhishm on all sides with a
great shower of arrows. The son of Ganga then saw Jamadagni’s son stationed on a celestial chariot.

It was stocked with all kinds of radiant weapons that were extraordinary to look at. It was created from his mind and was sacred. It was as expansive as a city. It was yoked to celestial horses and decorated with gold. It was adorned with a banner that had the sign of the moon embellished on it.

He held a bow and his quivers were fastened. He had guards on his arms
and fingers. His follower Akritavran, acted as his charioteer.

"Aakraman karo !" Parshuram said repeatedly, with a delighted heart.

Bhishm gestured his charioteer to drive forward. When they were at a distance of three arrow shots from Parshuram, Gangeya got down from his chariot, putting his weapons down, he went to his perceptor and knelt down with a bowed head.

"Bhrighunandan, aap mujhse shresht hai par fir bhi mai aapse yudh karunga. Aap mere Guru hai, aur dharm-gyaani bhi. Iss liye mujhe aashirwad de, ki mai vijayi hou." Bhishm said.

Parshuram replied in a pleased tone, "Kurushresht, samriddhi praapti ki iccha rakhne walo ki yahi karna chahiye. Yahi unn logo ka dharm hai jo apne se shresht se yudh kar rahe ho. Apni sampurn kshamta se yudh karo. Mai tumhe Vijay ka aashirwad nahi de sakta, kyuki tumhare samaksh Mai swayam khada hu. Jaao aur yudh karo. Mai tumhare aacharan se prasann hu."

Bhishm then wasted no moment and swiftly got mounted back on his chariot. He once again blew his conch shell, decorated with gold, to show his desire to fight.

And thus the fight between Parshuram and Bhishm began.
