Alright so here we're seeing these young 22 year old's cross a parapet where they could die or be killed. Gives me Dauntless vibes from the Divergent series by Veronica Roth. Do something brave to risk your life and prove yourself.
What I do find interesting is her way of reciting history of the realm to calm herself down. Not only does this show her scribe training, her preferred trade, but gives the readers a look into the world. This could have just as easily been narrated, but I think it's effective.
