Gryphon fliers are fighting for their people. Doesn't seem like a war needs to be had between the dragon riders. I'm sure the generals are covering the true intentions for raids, or not caring enough to figure out why it's happening or help. Violet is realizing things about her mother and how she hides things from even her.
It makes sense for them to go into battle to help the civilians, it's their nature. I'm glad they did. It's good practice for her and Tairn, and for her signet control.
I still don't understand why the riders die if their dragons die, but the dragons don't die if their riders do. Again, the rules of magic in this world are not spelled out.
