Not a second too soon, Kimmy stormed up the stone steps from the cellar. Her eyes were red, tears clogged her eyelashes. She looked like she had fought a bear.

Still half-blind, she stumbled across the carpet, her heavy feet tangling in the folds and forcing her to the floor. With a scream, she fell lengthways, hitting her knees on the hard stone.

Just in time, Kyle managed to jump out of the door through which he and Soap had come and close it behind him unnoticed. Tense, he pressed his back against the old wood.

His breath burning in his lungs, he could barely catch a clear thought as his brown eyes fell on his friend.

With a smug grin, Soap raised his hand. Something dangled from his outstretched index finger. The empty shell of the grenade.

A shiver ran through Kyle's body. He couldn't help but laugh hoarsely. Sweat dripped from his forehead.

"You slick bastard.", he gasped, his voice still trembling with adrenaline.

Satisfied with himself, Soap pulled his mask off his face to take a deep breath.

"She didn't even see me.", he said, putting an ear to the door to listen. "Maybe they'll all just think she's crazy."

"That she was attacked?"

"Yeah. Why not?", the Scot shrugged. "She's on heavy stuff, probably in need for more right now. Hallucinations are not uncommon."

Kyle nodded thoughtfully.

Delusions. On that basis, the police forces present would be obliged to take them into protective custody. Especially because the boys were disturbed by the situation.

Everything played right into his plan. Now all that was left was for the ending to be good. Holding his breath, he leaned his head back, closed his eyes and listened.

On the other side of the door, Kimmy was screaming for her sons. It sounded like a wild animal raging in its cage. A loud bang made him flinch. She must have knocked over one of the pieces of furniture.

Again she screamed, this time so loudly that even those present on the inside of the castle became restless. Kyle could hear the policemen banging on the door. Kimmy raged, screamed and cursed.

Then she suddenly panicked. Her footsteps travelled up and down behind the door. It sounded like she couldn't breathe. He moved nervously, trying to stretch his head to get a look through the window.

But Soap pulled him back into a crouch and shook her eyes warningly. Grimly, he gestured with his head back to the wall.

It was time to go or they might get caught.

With a heavy heart, Kyle hesitated, his dark eyebrows drawn together. He shook his head slightly. Soap simply grabbed him by the collar and pulled him along.

"Now.", he hissed through clenched teeth and pushed his teammate along.

Kyle managed with difficulty. His legs refused more and more with each step, wanting to turn round and go back to the boys. But when he put a hand on the wall he had come over, he hesitated for good and glanced over his shoulder down into the courtyard.

Your mother tugged angrily at a policeman's shoulder while your father threatened every act of violence in the world. Tempers were tense, it was obvious on every policeman's face that they wanted to avoid an attack by a drug addict.

"Come on.", Soap hissed again, throwing his legs over the wall for support. "Otherwise it was all for nothing."

Kyle exhaled deeply. A noose tightened around his neck. Nausea spread through his stomach. Just as he had managed to climb over the wall, the door to the courtyard suddenly shot open and a very angry, very upset-looking Kimmy stormed out of the building.

Satisfaction grew in Kyle's chest as he watched the policemen overpower them and handcuff them.

"Where are my children?!", she shouted in a raspy voice. "WHERE? I NEED MY KIDS! MINE!"

With that, he disappeared behind the wall. Back on the ground, he immediately set about stripping everything off and thrust it all into Soap's arms.

"Thank you.", he said breathlessly and ran off. "Thank you for everything!"

The Scotsman remained behind with a mild smile, shrugging his shoulders.

"You owe me!", he shouted.

"Everything! Anything you want!"

Fog played around his curls as he climbed from the meadow back onto the road. You immediately ran towards him, your arms wrapped around his torso and squeezed him so tightly that he couldn't breathe for a moment.

And yet. As soon as your warmth nestled against his body, he couldn't help but bury his face against your shoulder and inhale deeply. You were trembling. All his muscles were stiff and tense.

It felt like a knife could cut the tension.

In this brief moment of calm, you couldn't help but shed tears. Slowly, almost with foreboding, you lifted your head to look at him with reddened eyes. A silent question was asked. And he smiled mildly, nodded.

"Don't worry.", he whispered and pressed a gentle kiss to your lips.

Your fingers tangled in the fabric of his shirt. Gratitude and sickeningly painful relief filled your chest. You almost threw up.

"Kyle...", you whispered as the tears flowed again. "Thank you..."

"Hush.", he whispered while his eyes were fixed on the exit of the castle.

The beating of your heart was in your throat.

A few tense moments passed. The excitement could be heard throughout the neighbourhood. Then, finally, the metal gates opened and your parents came rushing out.

As if her lives depended on it, your mum held Elli in her arms while your dad held Matti. At the edge of your endurance, you looked at Kyle, exhausted, tired, and smiled.

"Thank you.", you whispered and ran to hug your children.

"Dad!", immediately both boys began to cry.

Their little fingers reached out for you, burying themselves in your clothes, never to let go as they cried and screamed.

"Take it easy, my sweet.", you whispered as your legs gave way and you had to sit on the floor.I am here. I'm here."

"Kyle saved us...", Elli whispered in your ear. "But that's our secret."

You laughed. As cruel as this day was, you couldn't help but laugh with relief. And spite.

Because the police was about to put Kimmy into an asylum.
