This chapter is the same day as the last, it continues!
Enjoy :)Chapter 54
Tuesday November 21st
Mallory's POVAfter a day that started off chaotic with an unexpected code blue before I even saw Harry this morning, and ending with a kid finally eating after days of refusal all over shrimp, we finally made it to the end.
Typically at this point in the day, I'd be down in the locker room listening to my friends share details about their days. Mason would usually make fun of somebody by now, and Isabella would offer leftover snacks from her locker. It was the wind down to a long, exhausting, day of our hectic career.
Although today, all my friends are downstairs and I'm making my way to Harry's office to go over a very exciting surgery. Even just the small bit of information he told me earlier had made me feel honored to be a part of it, as he could have chosen anybody. Just because Harry and I...are the way we are, that doesn't mean I think I'd get picked automatically.
Ever since he asked me to be a part of it, it's been on my mind. It was an incredible sounding case that any intern would be lucky to be scrubbing in on, and something so innovative and new to help out his patient. I know that Harry has been doing this for a while longer than I have, and he likely grew up surgically minded because of his mother, but it was always surprising to see his brain in action.
Harry honestly comes up with some of the most interesting and smart surgeries. Even before I worked here, he's been a surgeon involved in many surgeries that others would be scared of due to the risk. He doesn't tend to shy away from anything that might be scary, and to overcome that, he makes sure every potential of something going wrong is as miniscule as possible.
I felt someone coming up beside me, turning my head to the right to see that it was Harry himself. He went to go tell Stevie that he'd be a little bit longer today due to our meeting so she knew where he was and what he was up too. He always liked to keep her in the loop.
"Ready?" Harry asked me, and I sped up my steps to walk as quickly as he was.
"Yep" I nodded. "Is this what you were always researching and wouldn't tell me about?"
"Maybe" Harry shrugged his shoulders, going ahead and unlocking his office door. I thanked him as he held it open for me to walk through first, stepping inside and taking a seat at one of the guest chairs.
"Hmm" I hummed, watching him walk around his desk and sit down in his office chair. He scooted in closer, booting up his computer as well as pulling a folder out from one of the drawers. I didn't dare touch anything unless he gave me the go ahead, Harry's work was always so organized, and I'd be damned if I messed anything up on him accidentally.
"So obviously, you met my patient. Ava Mei, 2 years old, born with tracheal agenesis. A rare but usually fatal birth defect that occurs when the trachea is either absent or severely undeveloped. Do you know the fatally rate for that?" Harry asked me.
"80?"
"99% fatally rate" Harry corrected, interlocking his fingers together as his hands rested on the desk. "See why this case is a lot?"
"I do" I answered. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous. Although I feel that working with Harry has gotten slightly easier in the past few weeks, this was a major deal, and the pressure was definitely on. Any slight movement of my hands in surgery that Harry doesn't approve on would be grounds in his eyes to blame me if anything went wrong. He's precise, exact, detail oriented, and stern. This surgery was going to be incredibly difficult for me and it was dire that I prepared myself as much as possible with the little amount of time I was given.
