Chapter 48
Friday November 10th
Mallory's POV

"Seriously?" I muttered under my breath, closing the fridge with annoyance, although I'm not quite sure why I'm surprised. "You don't have butter?"

I grabbed the spatula off the counter and flipped the pancakes on the griddle before me, satisfied to see them all maintain their perfect shape and golden color. I grabbed paper plates off the shelf while I waited for the other half to cook. Honestly, I was surprised to see pancake mix that wasn't expired but it also made me happy because I knew I could indulge in some before I headed to work.

Even if we don't have butter.

I opened the pantry to at least pull out the syrup, grimacing when the bottle was sticky and coating my hands with the substance. I tossed it onto the counter and found a paper towel to wet and clean everything off with. I picked up the spatula once more and scooped the pancakes onto everyone's designated plates, the delicious scent filling my nostrils. Triumphant and on an empty stomach, I couldn't wait to eat.

It was early that I was over here making breakfast but that's because I needed to stop by before my shift. Plus, it's not like they would know any better. Waking them up to eat at 5am or 1pm was practically the same thing in their eyes. Weaving through all of their clutter and mess on the floor, I headed into the living room and gently set the plates by their sides. With a free hand, I shook their bodies lightly to wake them up without alarming them. I was met with several grunts and groans from both parents, annoyed that I would even think about waking them from their slumber.

"C'mon, you have to eat something" I whispered to my mother, frowning at the sight of her. I was hopeful that after her scare in the hospital that there was even an attempt at being better than this. Maybe it was naïve to think, and Noah would agree, that she would put down the alcohol at least for a while. I guess I should've known better so that I wasn't left disappointed once again.

"Mallory" She muttered, eyes barely open enough to see me.

"Hi mom" I whispered, unable to help myself from tenderly brushing the hair out of her face. "Eat some breakfast, and then you need a shower before I go, alright?"

"What time is it?" She groaned, slowly pulling her body upright, but reluctantly. I can't say I'm happy about being awake this early either, but it's simply what I had to do. I felt slightly bad waking them up, but I wanted to make sure they got a meal in. I haven't been able to stop by here as much as I did before I began my residency, and I was starting to feel bad about it. I didn't want to abandon them in a similar sense to the way they abandoned me.

"5 in the morning, but you can sleep after I leave" I suggested, putting the plate in her lap. Tiredly, she nodded her head and began to pick at the meal that I made, and that was enough for me to go focus on my dad. I did the same thing with my father, gently waking him up out of a deep sleep and filling him in that I made food. He was harder to get to listen, which isn't surprising, but eventually I was proud that I got both of them to pretty much clear their plates.

I turned the shower water on, checking the temperature and scarfing down my food in between. I was used to eating rushed meals at this point between cramming for med school and eating whatever I can between patients. My parents were both groggy but definitely more awake at this point, which was fine because I practically scolded them both to get into the shower rather than having to drag them.

While they were busy, I did my best to tidy up around the house. I disposed of beer bottles, trash, and threw dirty clothes into the laundry. I basically did anything that I could do without much trouble to take care of them in my limited amount of time. I was the only one who would do it.
