Chapter 5
Friday August 18th
Mallory's POV

"We have multiple car crash victims on their way. I need all hands on deck and I need your best work" Dr. Evans stood in front of Camilla, Mason, Beau, Isabella, and I. We were all gowned, gloved, and awaiting for our first major trauma cases to arrive to the ER. Only Camilla, who was ecstatic that she got put on trauma today, was assigned to Dr. Evans, but the rest of us were paged to help out.

Surgically, I was just as excited to get to handle a trauma case like this one. As a surgeon, you crave for the cut, the sutures, the procedures. You want the most interesting traumas and you are elated when you get to be in surgery, especially as a resident. Even if it sounds crazy. On the personal side, you dread the times you'll be told there's been an accident, shooting, or a fire, because you don't want to see the disaster it causes.

"This is the best day of my life" Camilla clapped her hands together, earning a scowl from Dr. Evans.

"Dr. Lopez, please remember there are actual lives on the line and not just surgeries to check off your wishlist" He scolded her, and is it bad if I say I'm glad somebody has?

She only rolled her eyes when he turned around.

The 6 of us made it out to the ambulance bay when 4 different ambulances came barreling in, lights and sirens flashing. Camilla of course, took ahold of the first ambulance. Getting the information from the paramedics and rushing the 25 year old male victim inside the hospital. Inside, Dr. Brooks was waiting for them.

The second ambulance was mine.

The paramedics, Dr. Evans, and I got the stretcher out of the ambulance. A woman who appeared to be around my age was laying there alert, neck collar around her neck to keep her in place. The paramedic rattled off her information "22 year old pregnant restrained passenger. T boned on her side. Prolonged extrication in the field. BP 90/50 and pulse in the 80's"

"Trauma room 1" Dr. Evans said to me, the two of us rushing to bring the stretcher in there.

"I'm fine, really" The patient started to speak. "I'm okay. Just please check on my baby. And my husband. And my parents, they were in the other car when some guy crashed into us. Noah! Are my mom and dad still alive? Did you see them?"

The other man we brought in started to answer back, assumingly her husband. "They're in the other ambulances behind us. they're fine!"

"Are they?" She looked at me.

"I'll have someone check on them" I assured, jumping right in and assisting Dr. Evans with his initial assessment of her injuries. He told me to go ahead and get an ultrasound to check on the baby, and Dr. Herrera is on her way down. That's the best OBGYN this hospital has.

In the chaos, I could hear Beau and Isabella bringing in my patient's parents. Specifically, her mother screaming "Get me the strongest pills you got because this hurts like a dickens!"

"That would be your mom?" I poured the ultrasound gel onto her bare stomach, using the little wand to try and find the fetal heartbeat.

When the family all started to call out to one another, and the dad started to demand they leave him alone and he wants to see his daughter, it made it quite difficult to hear. I continued to move my hand around her stomach listening for the sound.

A woman wearing pink scrubs, a doctors coat, and a determined look on her face joined Dr. Evans, myself, and my patients father who shoved Beau out of the way to get here in the room. I was still struggling to find the heartbeat over the sound of everyone, with my patient starting to ask if her baby was okay. I looked over at who I assumed to be Dr. Herrera, almost asking if she wanted to take over, but she shook her head.
