Chapter 23
Sunday September 17th
Mallory's POV"Drain's in a good position"
"She's breathing over the vent" I removed my stethoscope from the baby's chest. "Should we consider extubating her?"
"Yes, but watch for apneic episodes, and keep track of her C.B.C" Dr. Herrera answered. "There's still too much blood draining from her head"
"Got it" I nodded and made a mental note.
"I want you on her case majority of the day" Dr. Herrera looked at me. "I believe you can handle it"
My eyes lit up. I tried to hide the vast amount of appreciation that I had of the fact that she believes in me. I knew I needed to step up to the plate to not prove her wrong, and for the baby's sake more than mine. It was a lot of pressure, but I felt up for it. "Yes, I can"
"Great. Go on and see the chief now, and let me know when you're finished"
I nodded and left the room, making my way to the Chief's office. Even though I've been in this hospital a month now, I had to use the signs on the walls to figure out where to go. I've only been here once before and I was trailing behind Harry trying to keep up with him, so remembering the steps I took wasn't on my mind. I managed to make it here however only getting lost once, but I recovered quick.
I took a deep breathe to prepare myself and let my fist connect with the wood of the door, knocking on it twice. I heard her call out a "Come in!" so I turned the door handle and headed inside. The warm smile on her face helped calm me down as I took a seat in the leather chair in front of her. As long as I didn't mistake it as a sinister smile before she told me I was fired, I felt more confident than I did 5 minutes ago.
"You wanted to see me Chief" I put my hands in my lap, trying to act like the weight of this conversation hasn't been on my mind all morning. The Chief was a woman I haven't seen much of in all the time I've spent here, just because she is so busy, so it was still slightly intimidating to sit in front of her. After all, she helps control my fate here.
"Yes Dr. Monroe" She smiled, pushing a stack of manilla folders to the side of her desk. "You seem nervous. Are you?"
"Slightly" I answered honestly, hiding it with a chuckle.
"Don't be. Every so often I just like to take a few minutes to check in with the interns and gather information about their experience. You're not the only one" Chief West explained, and instantly I sighed of relief.
This was just a procedural check in, not a targeted meeting, which helped. I rubbed my palms on my jacket, forcing myself to be more composed now that I knew I wasn't being fired. She also did not seem angry with me, which gave me a inkling that Harry hasn't gotten in her ear. I hoped I was right.
"Oh, okay" I smiled slightly.
"To begin I've talked to your attending's regarding your first month here" She started, which opened that dread in my stomach once again. Clearly, she's talked to Harry and I don't see how that will help me at all. "To start I've heard good things thus far. Dr. Herrera speaks highly of your performance, and Dr. Machado appreciates your drive and ability to speak up about patients. You appear to be very knowledgeable about your work, but aren't afraid to ask questions, which is great. Dr. Brooks also spoke highly. Overall, I'm pleased with what I've heard"
