Chapter 13
Monday August 28th
Mallory's POV

I was awoken by the loud, blaring, lights and sirens of an ambulance approaching the hospital. I woke up in a rush by the abrupt noise, groaning when I checked my phone to see what time it was. It was 2 in the morning, I had finally managed to fall asleep an hour ago, and now my progress was ruined. I looked around, now remembering that I had parked my car at the hospital last night after a stressful day. I knew I had to be here at 5 am so I decided to get a head start.

In the dark, only illuminated by the streetlights in the parking lot, I examined my surroundings to see what was going on. I saw the ambulance out the window, but I also furrowed my brows when I saw the shape of a similiar sillohette heading inside the hospital doors. I recognized it to be Harry, but my brain was too tired to question why he was here in the middle of the night.

I was supposed to babysit yesterday to get some money, since I was left with 1 singular dollar to my name. Even though I was exhausted mentally and physically from the last two weeks, I was looking forward to babysitting and seeing one of my favorite kids. As well as being able to afford food and gas for a couple of days.

Unfortunately, I woke up to the dreaded text that the little girl came down with a sickness in the middle of the night and they were no longer going to need me to watch her. When I clicked on the message, I honestly started crying, wondering if I was ever going to get a break? I desperately needed the money and I was counting on it, and now I was left with nothing.

I had sighed loudly and wrote them back a message hoping that she feels better soon and I hope we can reschedule and then threw my phone at the side of my car in frustration. There was no way that I was going to be able to make it until I get my hospital paycheck on Friday without that money I was supposed to be bringing in.

I hated having to ask Veronica or Noah for help. It filled me with dread to even say the words outloud, even if I knew the both of them just wanted the best for me. I had to muster through it however, because I needed money for food at the least. I could walk to work if my car ran out...

I called Noah first, feeling like I've relied too much recently on Veronica and I never wanted to be too much of a burden to her. She tells me I'm not, but she's constantly worrying about me, and surely that has to be taxing.

I felt defeated when he didn't answer the phone.

He was probably just busy with the kids when I called, so I waited to hear from him. I had dug a granola bar out of my bag, shoving my other clothes out of the way to get to it, when my eyes caught the sight of something green. Confused, I grabbed the 20 dollar bill out of my dirty scrub pocket, and shook my head when I saw the sticky note from Veronica on it.

It was yelling at me to stop leaving money on her counter. She must've slipped it in my pocket that day that she brought me lunch.

I hated that she paid me back, because she genuinely deserved for me to try my best in repaying her for all she's done, but I would be lying if I said I wasn't relieved that I now had more to get me through the week.

That was yesterday's problem, and now I'm awake at 2am on a Monday morning. I had no idea why Harry was even here at the hospital at this time of night, he must've got called in to an emergency surgery, because he wasn't on the schedule that I saw.

I rolled over trying to get comfortable once again, by the time I fell back asleep, I wouldn't even have long before I had to walk in and start my shift. I pulled the blanket back on my body and closed my eyes, willing myself to fall asleep.
