Chapter 70
Friday December 8th
Harry's POV

My hands were still shaking.

They were shaking when I approached Mallory's unconscious body in the alley.

They were shaking as I flipped her over and got sight of the wound she suffered.

They were shaking as I relentlessly did CPR on her in the ambulance.

And they, still, were shaking as I was scrubbing them clean.

My heart was still rapidly beating in my chest as I washed the feeling of Mallory's blood off my stained hands. Just moments ago, Dr. Brenner and Max whisked her off to another floor to make it to an operating room, as Mason and I stood back and watched silently. There were no words uttered between us as they left, or as the doors closed, and shut us off from her indefinitely.

Instead, Mason immediately started to walk away, from my understanding he was going to the gallery as soon as possible. It was the only location that Max was allowing the both of us to be, for whatever reason, and he wasn't going to pass that up. However, I stared at the closed doors for a moment longer, feeling his eyes on me as he turned back around. He looked at me, silently asking if I was coming with him, but the answer was no.

At least right now.

I wanted to be as close to Mallory as possible every second through this, but I couldn't fathom going up there just yet. Like Max pointed out, I needed to clean myself off as soon as possible. My hands and clothes were stained with the only part of Mallory I had right now, and I couldn't walk around the hospital like this. Even though it pained me to admit it, my best friend was right, I needed to get a change of clothes and wash away her blood coating my fingernails.

I also needed to get my daughter some breakfast, because the one that I did was now strewn messily in the streets of the busy city. Her special chocolate chip pancakes fell out of my hands the second that I recognized it may be Mallory lying there, and I needed to replace them for her. I couldn't just leave my daughter without food to go sit in the gallery, although maybe I was using it as an excuse because I wasn't prepared to watch yet.

I also didn't want to walk with Mason. For just a few minutes, I needed to be alone, and I didn't think Bennett was going to be a reason I felt better. My tolerance for him started and ended at warning him it was Mallory on the table, and I needed to clear my head before I was trapped in the gallery box with him.

I sighed heavily and looked down at my hands, watching the blood drip off of them and land in the sink. The crimson mixed with the water, turning it red as it flowed down the drain, tightening the feeling in my chest. I stared down at the water as it continued to vanish, washing away the only part of Mallory that I could touch right now. Her blood on my hands was the single thing I could feel of her, because the rest of her was away from me unconscious on a table.

It was a jarring reminder of what happened in that alleyway and how I ended up covered in her to begin with. It was like every time I looked down at my trembling hands, I was back in that darkened space, rolling her over for the first time. I wasn't just looking at my hands, I was looking back at Mallory's pale face. I was looking at her wound for the first time again. I was looking at her future of becoming a doctor being torn from her. I was looking at all the sunrises she would forever miss.

"God damn it!" I grit my teeth and grew angry at the thoughts I had. It was like I didn't leave the alley, and I was still shouting at the bystanders around us to help me. Even though my body was in another place, my head was still back where I found her. I couldn't even blink without seeing the vision of her underneath my arms, fighting for her life. Even for the split seconds my eyes would be closed, all I could see was Mallory, and not in the usual way. She wasn't there smiling or telling a bad joke, she was cold and lifeless and hurt.
