DYLAN

My eyes scan the beach, watching the chaos unfold from a safe vantage point. This wasn't how I wanted it to go. But here we are.

Cordelia squeezes my hand. She's waiting underwater, just a few inches deeper. I pull my head back down and signal to her. It's not time yet.

We float beneath the surface as rolling swells gently sway our bodies. Here, no sound can be heard, no violence seen. It is as if we're worlds away.

The plan is to wait until their forces are weakened. As I am apparently the mermaids' strongest weapon, they are saving my power for when it's needed most. Someone is scouting near shore, and will deliver the message when she feel's it's necessary.

Time passes and the battlefield thins. Each time I peak above the surface there's less of them, less of us.

The sky has grown darker.

I pull Cordelia up from below.

"Where's their leader?" I ask, scanning.

"That's strange." She murmurs. "I don't see him..."
