When I open the front door my Dad's stern voice immediately greets me.

"Where were you?" He asks.

"Um."

"Um?" He casts a disappointed glare in my direction. "Didn't know sending you to boarding school would turn you into such an irresponsible kid."

I say nothing, slipping off my shoes in palpable tension.

As I walk towards him entering the hall he speaks again, "Left your sister all alone in the house."

"It was only for a half an hour, most." I retort.

"I heard you were late picking her up from school today." He states.

Crap.

"My English teacher kept me late." I say, shifting towards the stairs.

"You're still her brother you know."

"Half." I murmur.

"You've got to look after her, she's just a little kid." He says.

"I know, I promise I'll get better at it." I state, heading up the creaky steps slowly.

I make it to my room without another remark from Dad. The thing is, his approval is the last thing on my mind. As I flop down on my bed, I can't stop thinking about her.

Cordelia.

Her image dances through my mind as I fall asleep.
