"That was gone quickly."
I look up to see the nameless boy.
He eyes my bowl,"Do you want more?"
My jaw hits the floor.
More?
"Yes, more." He replies. I didn't realize that I had spoken aloud.
I nod swiftly. He calls out and the woman hobbles back and refills my bowl.
"More food?" I whisper in disbelief.
"Yes, why is that so hard to take in?" He asks.
"At home we're given fixed rations. We're not allowed more than that." I sigh, help myself to the second serving-savoring each bite.
He doesn't say anything.
I look up from my bowl to find him staring at me.
That pretty girl comment flashed in my mind.
"What?" I say.
"You're not allowed to ask for more food?!" He exclaims.
I shrug.
Stupid, stupid girl. I chide myself, and to think he was staring at you cause he thought you were 'pretty'.
"Uhhh...yeah, no more than one serving and the same meal everyday- that is, until we become adults..." I say sadly.
"Wow." He says.
His gray eyes bore into me.
I squirm."No, not wow." I huff."At least I had a home there or at least I had people who love me..."
I felt my anger spark at the thought of Grandma.
"Your grandmother loves you." He says softly.
My voice is tight."I wouldn't say that anymore."
I was very close to Grandma before he was sent out.
"Why would you say that?"
"Because." I snap.
A pained expression flashes on his face and was gone so fast that I thought it hadn't happened.
The woman is back and she she silently asks me whether I wanted another serving.
I shake my head and she collects my bowl and was off.
"Sorry." I apologize."Sorry." I say again and rub my face.
"Why are you apologizing?"
Tears pinprick my eyes.
Why had I even come here?
I was so stupid."Why are you even talking to me?!" I shudder as a lump rises to my throat. "Why did you save me?"
I bury my face in my palms.
He was silent for so long that I thought he had left.
"I saved you because..." he pauses,"because I couldn't save my mother. I couldn't watch you die like how I watched her die." His voice cracks on the word die.
As much as I was curious, I decide not to pry,"I have a twin." I said, trying to hide my tear streaked face.
He just nods.
We are silent for a moment.
"Samantha loves you." He says.
"Easy for you to say."
"Trust me."
I roll my eyes.
"You are loved. Value that. There are others who receive none of that." He says sternly.
I have a feeling he isn't just talking about me anymore. I'm about to protest when he cuts me off-
"I have something to attend to... I'll see you around." and he is gone.
Someone walks over to me.
I look up to see a girl around my age.
