Grandma wakes me up at dawn.
"Cole is waiting for you outside." She says and is gone.

There is a stack of fresh clothes on the desk which I stiffly change into.

These clothes feel foreign to my skin. They are not starchy like the clothes given to us by the Saviors.

I tidy up my hair and tie it into a ponytail as I unzip the flap.

Cole stands outside, his face impassive.
"What are we going to do today?" I ask.

"Hunting."

"Right." I nod.

'Cause I'm so good a that. Not.

I follow him to the campfire remains.
A trunk filled with weapons has been placed there.

"Take a few." Says Cole.

"I don't...use weapons."

"Just take something."he chuckles.

---

In the end, Cole handed me a spear and a dagger. Now, I follow him through the paths between the tents.

I stare at his back. I can make out the hard muscles through the t-shirt.

Not that you should care.

Or look.

I roll my eyes.

The idiot hasn't even introduced himself.

I look away.

Beyond the circle of tents is a thick forest.

"We're going there?"

"Yes, pretty girl, there."

Pretty girl.

My mind is reeling but I ignore it,"I have a name you know! And it's Lisa."

"Oh hello, Lisa." He says as we enter the woods.

I groan,"I am very tempted to whack you with this spear."

"Only if you manage to land a blow." Cole says, shrugging.

"What makes you think I can't?"

"Intuition."

I roll my eyes as I quicken my pace so that I'm walking beside him.

For a few moments we walk in silence, but my mind is filled with questions.
"The Commander says you have to answer all my questions." I say.

"Yeah, so?"

"Where are we?"

"Outside the force field."

I hiss,"Oh really?"

"Okay, okay." He grins in surrender."The force field has a certain radius, which covers most of the continent. The parts that are too close to the sea or too forested are left out. That's where we are."

"Okay,"I nod,"but how are we able to breathe?"

"The oxygen it thin out here, but we leak one of the force field's oxygen pumps once a month. The machine produces so much oxygen that it lasts a whole month."

"And the people on the Inside don't notice?"

"Normally-no, but we were about to be discovered two days ago and there was no time to block the leak, so they found out."Cole explains.

"Yeah my mom told me about the breach."

He stiffens at the word mom.

I quickly change the topic,"D'you know Cara?"

"Yes."

"How?"

"She's a friend's sister."

I think I feel a little relief.

Why are you relieved? You met him just yesterday!

"She's obsessed about you."I laugh.

"Many are compelled by my existence."

Like me.

Wait what?!

I shake my head.

"Have you all grown up out here?"

"No." Cole answers,"some of us come from the Inside or we are descendants of those who were sent out from the Inside."

"Basically all of you are either old or criminals or descendants of a criminal."I sigh.

"Yeah."

"What about you? Are you from the Inside?"

He flinches and I assume it is because of a brutal childhood.

I don't expect an answer, but after a few minutes, he says-
"Yes."
