"What's your name, girl?"she asks.

The Commander is young, no more than twenty.

"Lisa."

The Commander nods."Cole tells me you have a lot of questions."

You think?

I flush.

"I have permitted Cole to answer them. All of them."

I nod.

I stare at my shoes, avoiding the Commander's gaze.

I look up when she says,"Lisa, there is a war coming," she pauses as if to let the words sink in,"And right now, we are the only ones who can stop it."

"A war?!"

"Yes."

A war?
Between whom?
When?
Tyler.
Mom.
Dad.
Do the Saviors know?

"Cole has informed of what will...become of you if you return to the Inside."She shakes her head, "Fortunately, I am not a fool like those on the Inside. Every life is valuable, including yours."

"You are more than welcome to stay with us." She adds.

"Thank you." I say, sagging with relief.

"Tomorrow," She goes on,"I'll ask Cole to look into your training."

Training?

"Training?"

"We cannot survive without hard work."

I say nothing.

"You may go now. Rest. Tomorrow is the dawn of your new life." She dismisses.

"Commander." I bow and back out of the tent.

Grandma is standing outside.
She wordlessly leads me back to the tent I woke up in.

"This is your tent from now on." Is all she says and I am alone.
I crash into bed and I am asleep in minutes.

I am seven years old.
Grandma sits across me.
"The Saviors are a group, like a government, they keep us in line and protect us. Only a limited number of people are allowed to join-like your mother." She smiles,"Before the Saviors came, everything was out of hand. There were beggars, homeless, too many people, too many rebellions, too much corruption and a lot of pollution and radiation. The Earth was almost destroyed Lisa."
I shudder.
The pictures of The Before scared me.
"The Saviors were a group. They introduced advanced technology to protect us. To make things easier, they put a force field around most of our continent."
I am listening intently.
"You are lucky. You have not seen the world suffer like I have."she sighs.
"Grandma?"
"Yes?"
"Will we ever get to leave the force field behind and explore?"
"Some day, Lisa. Some day." She says, ruffling my hair.
