Magnus breathed out anxiously. It had to be perfect. This was a perfect moment for them, and it had to be reflected. He’d done it. He’d made himself mortal. He could stay by Alec’s side for the rest of his life. It was the equivalent to engagement for them. He’d made such a risky move for Alec because he was so sure they would last for the rest of their days. He flexed his hands nervously, waiting for the shadowhunter to get there. When he began pacing, he heard the footsteps on the stairs and the door opened.

There was something so different to Alec now. His skin was white and the way he moved was so…off. Everything that was so familiar about the boy was gone and Magnus’ body absolutely and squarely rejected him as Alec Lightwood. He knew what had happened. He could sense it on him. “You’re a vampire now.” His voice came out unfamiliar and…disappointed. A sick feeling rose up in Magnus and he felt panicky. His legs felt like they wanted to buckle beneath him. Alec licked his lips. “…Yes.” He answered quietly.

“What happened?” Magnus asked in the same tone that sounded as though he were talking to a stranger, not his boyfriend. “We were fighting some vampires, and…I got attacked and overwhelmed. So they buried me, and I rose up.” Magnus nodded, noticing the flecks of mud in Alec’s hair and the dirt on his clothes. “Who did you attack?” he asked coldly. He could sense it. Alec’s first meal hadn’t been animal blood. He looked down guiltily. “All of them. Once I rose up…apparently I lunged at Clary and I started attacking her, and then they managed to get me off her, so I attacked Izzy…and after that they sort of just let me drink from each of them until I was full.” He explained, looking at Magnus, searching for sympathy.

“That’s your friends’ blood running through your veins. None of that is yours.” The warlock said. Alec put his hands over his ears. “Don’t say that! I know I did something awful and I can’t forgive myself so I came here expecting to be comforted…and…you treat me like a murderer! Simon’s actions got Maureen killed, and you don’t treat him like this! Why are you doing this to me?!” Alec screamed. He was desperate. He just wanted things to go back to normal. But how could things go back to normal now? Because he wasn’t normal. He didn’t feel like Alec. He felt lost, and he wanted Magnus to help him find himself again. This time, though, Magnus was the one closing every exit and leaving him in this maze. “I’m mortal.” Magnus blurted out. “I did it for you, and now you’re…like this.” He said, “I’m sorry for being…angry, I just…we could have lived how we always dreamt we would live, and now that dream has been taken away and I’m aging, whilst you’re not.” He laughed, “Nothing’s changed. Nothing. We’ve just swapped roles. And now I can feel the constant fear you felt. And this time there’s nothing we can do to change that.” He said. Alec stared at him, big blue innocent eyes. At least those were the same. “So what should we do now?” he whispered. Magnus smiled,

“I’ve told you what we should do before. And I’ll tell you again. We do what every other couple does. Hope.”
