Jasmine
After the Cyrano situation Shawn and I had encountered for the first time, we were focused on finding ourselves again.
"Guys, what am I good at? Freshman year and I still don't know wether or not if I should join a club." Cory ranted to us, contemplating what problem he had to us.
"There's many clubs you can join." Shawn pointed out.
"Like what?"
"Football." Shawn exemplified some, but Cory instantly declined them hesitantly.
"Pain. Cleats, no."
"Dance?"
"Lotta girls. Tights. No."
"Theatre?"
"Lotta guys. Tights. No." Cory repeated for the third time. The only passion I had was my singing. Shawn had poetry, but he longed to keep it a secret between him and I, so I did. I didn't understand why. He had something he was really good at- we found our voices. I guess it was time to help find Cory's.
"That's the list, Cor." Shawn concluded, and Cory sighed in disappointment.
"I'm never going to find myself. You are the coolest guy in school, and Jasmine has the voice. Meanwhile I'm going to be that hobo on the street chucking peanuts at random people." Cory said, but truth was, he wasn't going to convey himself to be that type of person in the future. Cory had a talent. Plus, we were still blossoming; there was still time to find our hidden talents, it will take a while.
"Hey, you're honest, loyal, and decent. The qualities of a friend." Shawn reminded him, patting him on the back.
"Don't feel that way Cory," I insisted to him, comforting my friend,"you know, I didn't concentrate much on singing til now. That was with the help of you guys. You'll find something that floats your boat."
"Eh. Doubt it. I'm house broken too. I'm a stinkin' beagle."
:::
Cory
Lately I've been feeling insecure about my place as a freshman. I was feeling like a house broken dog, a beagle to be exact. I was searching for a purpose. I mean, Jasmine had singing. Topanga carried intelligence. Shawn had the coolness factor.
What did I have?
Instead of ranting about a discussion about boring literacy like always, Mr. Turner was talking about the nominees for the next class president. As he was stating the information, I couldn't help but fake sneezed, muffling out a boring.
"Detention." Mr. Turner mimicked back.
"Sorry." I said in the same fashion. For the president, they needed these qualities: honest, loyal, and decent.
Shawn nudged me, and I glanced back at him, curious on what he wanted.
"Cory, that's you." Shawn whispered.
"What?" I asked, confused. Where was this going?
"You wanted to know who you were." He reminds me, but I shook my head no.
"Come on-" Suddenly we got interrupted when Mr. Turner asked for any nominations to come up. Before Shawn could speak, Meece was the first one to speak.
"I got a good one! I nominate me. Topanga, Jasmine. How about it?" He said, eyeing his favor at the girls.
"Don't think about it, rat." Shawn warned him.
"No. I don't like you and go away." Topanga upfront avoided him, and Jasmine returned the favor.
"No thanks, Meece." Jasmine declined, glancing over at Shawn with a smirk.
After that there was a short term silence til Mr. Turner spoke up again.
"Come on guys, there has to be someone other than Meece that has to run for class president."
Shawn and I bickered on this, after I said I would nominate Meece.
"What are you doing? That's your competition." Shawn pointed out.
"I'm not running!" I declared to Shawn.
"Anybody?" Mr. Turner questioned the class again.
"I nominate the people's choice, Cory Matthews." Shawn suggested, and I glared back at him in dismay.
"Matthews, you've been nominated. Do you accept?" Mr. Turner interrogated me, at least checking with me first.
"No way-"
"No way he could turn down the chance to service his fellow students." Shawn interrupted, exaggerating the ends of my phrases. This is getting out of hand.
"What are you, his handler?" Mr.
"No he's not."
"Yes I am." Shawn insisted.
"Look, I don't know anything about being president, OK? I wouldn't have a clue," I said, standing up from my seat to make a clarifying statement to the class,"I'm not somebody special."
I took one glance around the room, and I began to feel different.
"I'm just an average, hard working guy like all of you. The simple, hard-working students who struggle day after day with too much homework, unfair teachers, and an antiquated justice system that relies too much on detention..." I continued,  finding myself catch into the moment from the smiles and gazes from all these students. For the first time in my life, i felt like I mattered to them for once. I never really felt important before.
From all of the support I seemed to be earning from my classmates, I confirmed my final decision.
"And if elected, if I win, and you guys vote for me, I would say to each and every one of you, 'Hey, thanks!'"
I decided to be class president after all.
:::
Shawn
I finally had Cory agree to the idea of him becoming class president. I was helping him by portraying the Vice President, assistant like role into helping succeed into this campaign.
I'm gonna put together a campaign like this school has never seen, an unstoppable tidal wave, gathering snow, blazing through the sky, crushing everything in its beak.
The first thing I was going to do was broadcast and edit video interviews with the people he was closest too in his life. First off, we were starting with his friends. Like Topanga and Jasmine.
I jotted down onto a card for what they needed to say in order for Cory to win this. It was all a commercial in order to gain votes. I had a video camera and knew how to edit perfectly, so it was going to turn out just right. I knew it would.
The first person I chosen to interview was Jasmine.
"Shawn, I hope you don't mind this, honey, but can I add other questions similar to the topic off this card?" Jasmine asked, allowing herself to sit on the edge of the seat, her legs dangling freely.
"Of course Jas, but still stick to the script," I ordered her, Cory came near her then I adjusted the video equipment to begin to film,"go."
"So, Cory, what are you going to do in order to make this school more better?" Jasmine asked, reading off of the notecard, and Cory flashed a grin.
"Add a water slide, a pool, a hot tub, and provide way better food in the cafeteria." Cory stated some of his ideas, and I couldn't help but smile.
"Sounds like fun." Jasmine stated at last, and I stopped filming.
"Good job, Jasmine. Now it's Topanga's turn."
:::
When it was Topanga's turn, it was stressfully frustrating. She wouldn't say what was on the script.
"Yeah, like I'm gonna say, "Cory's cute and cuddly. That's important to me as a girl,"Topanga argued discreetly, not content on my script idea, then glaring back at it,"and there's no M in cuddly!"
"Topanga, Jasmine did fine! Be like her! She said what she had to say." I pointed out.
"You're so sleazy." Topanga scolded then quickly walking away, and Cory flashed me a scornful look.
"What? What?" I asked in disbelief.
Now it was time to go ask Eric.
:::
"The idea here is that you and your brother share a common bond - brotherhood." I informed Cory and Eric. Once they came to an understanding with that, it was time to film.
"Okay, action." We started the scene off with Cory walking through the door like any normal day he usually done so.
"Hey, Cor!" Eric greeted with a warm smile.
"Hey, there, older brother." Cory greeted back with a cheesy grin on his face, heading to his brother.
"You know, Cor, I was just sitting here thinking, what makes my little brother special? What sets him apart from the other seventh-grade candidates? Is it his allergy to scallops?"
That was not in the script.
"Eric-"
"Is it his Scooby-Doo thermos?" Eric asked, then pulling out a Scooby-Doo thermos from out of nowhere.
"Where'd you find that?" Cory stammered quivering, then anxiously peering at the camera.
"No, I think it's his fuzzy bunny pajamas with the cottontail." Eric pulled those out too. God dammit, Eric.
"I haven't worn these for years, I swear." Cory reassured.
"Boinky, boinky, boinky." Eric made the pajamas as if they were hopping.
"Vote for me! Vote for me!" Cory tried to insist, voicing himself louder on an octave scale
"Boinky, boinky, boinky."
That was a disaster.
Next we decided to do some footage by ourselves, until Cory's mom interrupted us.
"Cut!"I exclaimed, but his mom was wondrous.
"Oh! Hey, guys, whatcha doin'?" She asked us simply.
"Cut!" I repeated, but Cory spoke up.
"Campaign commercial."
"Is this your script?" She wondered, excited, trying to take it but we begged to differ for her not to.
"No, no, n-" It was too late, she already started reading off of it.
"It's morning at Cory's house and Cory's having pizza for breakfast. Yes, Cory pretty much does whatever he wants. Why? Because Cory's parents are dead." Instead of a smile continuing to appear across her face, she instead formed a grimacing frown.
"Shawn wrote that." Cory insists. I admit, I did. But he had to seem appealing if he was going to win votes.
"Mrs. Matthews, I could lie to you." I assured her, trying to make things better, but it wasn't working.
"Oh, why stop now?" She asked, showing her signs of distraught.
"Our research shows that parents are not thought of as cool, so if we can position Cory as being "on his own," individual, independent, we increase his level of cool." I explained to her, hoping she'd understand.
"And, Cor, how cool do you feel about the recent demise of your parents?" She demanded Cory, crossing her arms. She was not impressed with our dealt situations.
"It's just temporary, Mom," Cory reassured, trying to comfort her,"I mean, as soon as I'm elected, you and Dad will be found living amongst the bears in the Oregon woods."

Jasmine
While Shawn and Cory working on the election for the new class president campaign, it gave me plenty of time to work on new songs. I brought my songbook Topanga purchased me for my birthday, and headed to the piano.
I opened up my songbook, flipping to the first page to where I provided information with the song I wrote.
I studied the piano keys and the song notes, then found myself playing.
I was caught up in the moment of music I didn't even realize Shawn was sitting next to me. I stopped playing for a moment, but then he gets a hold of my waist, settling me on top of his lap.
"Keep playing.." He whispered in my ear. Sitting on top of his lap now, I continued playing, hitting from key to key to go along with my song, and I started to sing.
At the same time Shawn kissed me on the cheek, calming me. I was still in the nervous stage of showing anyone my music, even Shawn a little. Once I was finished, Shawn set me beside him again, and he stood up.
"I have to go, but I love your song. You have your talent. How about like Cory, go publish it? I'll help you every step of the way with this too, you know that." Shawn reminded me, and I bit my lip, thinking. He was right with this.
What he did just now calmed me. When I was by myself, I was in my safe place. I realized I usually performed my songs near Shawn.
"You're my safe place." I murmured to him.
Shawn smiled, then asking what I meant by that.
"Every artist has their safe place. A place that calms them.... And you are always there." I spoke up at last for Shawn to hear clearly. He continued to smile, then planted a kiss on my cheek.
"You are my safe place too."

Shawn
As I was helping Cory with his campaign, my mind was also focused on Jasmine.
She told me I was her safe place. The place she escaped to had me in it- the world of her and I alone.
This is what was going to help her sing out loud to more people. To unleash her hidden talent. To be able to perform live to entertain not only them, but for herself.
My mind drifted away from that thought for a short second when we were campaigning in the cafeteria against Meece.
We showed our strength- or tried to, through many strategies we would improve on for this school. To make it seem like a cool place for students to enjoy.
Meece's was for paying everyone to go to school. On the other hand, ours, was to go to school like two days a week. Five day weekends added to that. Everyone was for that, until Meece was trying to break out the heavy cheese by saying he had a plan.
I doubt it would work, until Paula Kelly came with him seconds later.
Oh boy... I remembered.
I had some sort of cooties in the third grade, solemnly against girls in general.
So, as a result, I wrote on her notebook that all girls were icky.
Funny how things have changed since then.
"I was in third grade with Shawn Hunter, and when he wrote that all girls... were icky!" Paula informed the students, and the people were taken aback, gasping.
"But you have a girlfriend!" One reminded me.
"Yeah and I love her. I was only eight I didn't like girls then, but I love Jasmine!"
"That could change. Surprised your relationship has lasted this long, Shawn Hunter." Paula fired back at me.
"Flip flopper." Meece nicknamed me.
"What?" I questioned, dumbfounded.
"Flip flopper. Who knows what he could change his mind about next!" Meece stated, then standing on the tables.
He started chanting flip flopper, the other students joining in as well.
"Wait, wait, wait," Cory tried to pause the students, and they remained silent for him,"Shawn's not even running here."
"But he represents you, doesn't he?" Meece asked.
"I sure do!" I added in.
"Then Cory, are you prepared to drop out of the race?"
"No!" Cory declined, but Meece was still targeting at us.
"Are you prepared to drop your flip-flopping one-time sexist campaign manager?" Meece demanded, and I was taken aback. Did all of these people think that?
"All I want is justice. Shawn must go." Paula insisted, beginning to chant along with other students that I had to go. This was unbelievable. What Meece had against me. What they thought of Jasmine and me.... this was fueling my so many thoughts.  My mind didn't pay attention to what these students were saying as I stood there in disbelief, taking their shit, until Cory spoke up again.
"Wait a minute. Don't you guys want a president who's loyal to his friends 1000 percent?" Cory askedz
"No!" They declined his offer.
Seriously?
"Really? That's what you guys want?" Cory was shocked.
"Yes!" They agreed, and Cory glanced from me to them, making a decision. Then he made one, and that's when I began to realize: people are just plain dirty.
"Then Shawn is out." Cory says, the students applauding him on his decision. Meanwhile, I wasn't so happy either.
:::
Cory
I dropped Shawn out as my campaign manager, and I didn't feel one spark of guilt in me.
"How could you do this to me?" Shawn demanded me, fidgeting with the advertising voting pin he unclipped from his shirt.
"Did you hear them cheer, Shawn? I think we picked up a lot of girl votes.
You said we were weak on girls." I rambled on to him about what he said, but even he couldn't forget about what I finalized as a decision just now.
"Cory, you fired me." Shawn reminded me, angry.
"Well, yeah, just a little." I said, trying to act innocent.
"No, no. It was all of me."
"But I had to. We're in this to win, right?"
"We? We? We?!" Shawn was squeaking like an angry pig on the loose.
"Shawn, you're squealing." I was frightened by how he was acting.
"Yeah I'm squealing. That's the sound when your friend makes when he stabs you right in the back with a gun right in front of your eyes." His ways of metaphors didn't work in his sentence.
"Look, I just did what you told me to. I gave the people what they wanted." I was trying to reassure him into thinking of everything was okay, but he didn't seem to think so. He was extremely offended.
"Well, I want my campaign back."
"Since when was it your campaign?"
"Only since I nominated you and told you what to say every step of the way."
"You were helpful in the early going and I'll never forget that." I added in, being honest, but it ticked Shawn off even more.
"You fired me." He repeated.
"Shawn, my friend, this is not a time for bitterness. This is a time for healing." I stated, and Shawn bit his lip, preparing to say something to me again. Just split seconds he stood up from the table, as if he was intending on leaving.
"You know what Cory Matthews. If I met you just this second, I wouldn't know who you were." He fired back, his voice cracking a little.
"I'm Cory Matthews. The next president of the eighth grade." I declared proudly, as Shawn was leaving but he halted to a stop by the cafeteria doors. He turned back around so he could face me.
"Not without me, pal."
And with that, he left.
:::
Shawn
I made a decision later that day.
I embarked on running for class president myself. I was talking to Jasmine about it while she was working with her song.
"Do you want to be my campaign manager?" I asked her, and she nodded.
"Sure thing, Shawn." Jasmine accepted, and I couldn't help but smile. I turned my attention to her song, as I took a seat next to her and watched her work on it. She began to singing the lyrics to it, despite me being in the room. She was overcoming her fear of singing!
"Did you see that Jasmine?" I exclaimed, excited for her, and she started to grin too.
"Yes. I sang without you asking me too?"
"Yes!"
"I also have news," She added to her statement, and as we gazed into each other's eyes, locking them, she told me,"I decided to audition for a completion."
I couldn't help but demonstrate how proud I was for Jasmine by kissing her on the lips, taking her by the surprise. I pulled away, gaining a hold of bother her hands.
"I'm so proud of you, Jasmine." I murmured. She formed a warm, bright smile, and kissed me back in thanks.
First, I was running for class president and the debate was tomorrow, then this? I was excited for tomorrow.
"When is it, Jasmine?"
"It's in two weeks." She informed me nonchalantly.
I smiled widely, only to continue kissing her. I was proud of what she has come to. She listened to me. She was going into a completion to perform in front of judges. I knew for a fact I was going to watch her, like she was with me at this debate.
:::
Cory
I was waiting anxiously during the debate. What if I won? I wasn't going to be with Shawn anymore. I thought of dropping out of the race, but then I remembered Meece would be our class president of the eighth grade. I couldn't allow that to happen.
When it was time to start our speeches, Mr. Turner announced there was a last minute candidate running for president. Just then, revealing themselves out of the curtains, it was Shawn.
"Shawn?" I exclaimed. Everyone booed him at first, until they decided to gain some dignity to respect him. Meece rolled his eyes as Shawn came to speak into the microphone.
"I, Shawn Hunter: had cooties. But I fought my way back, and I stand by you cootie-free and girl friendly. And to prove that, I'd like to introduce you to my co-candidate for president, my beautiful, stunningly, talented girlfriend Jasmine Clayton." Shawn introduced himself properly, and revealing herself was Jasmine, who appeared flawless as ever even without trying. She wore a lavender colored shirt with a mini floral printed skirt to match, surrounded with lilac flowers. On her chest, placed was a campaign marker with Shawn's name on it.
She began to blush, as Shawn handed her a singled luscious red rose and embraced her into a warm hug. Everyone applauded as Shawn regained the respect he deserved.
Meanwhile, Meece was his in complete shock and his co-candidate Paula Kelly, crossed her arms. Us three stood there in disbelief as Shawn had famed his popularity by his recent action.
"Can he do this?" I demanded Mr. Feeny.
"Can he do this?" Mr. Feeny repeated the question to Mr. Turner, clearly not having a clear answer. Mr. Turner shrugged, saying he didn't see why not.
When I went up against Meece and Shawn, Meece was firing us with remarks and shots to decrease our chance of winning. Shawn and I had a quarrel ourselves about this whole campaign mess.
"I'm Cory Matthews. Man of the people." I insisted, but Shawn added his opinion.
"Okay man of the people. Didn't you lie to the people?" Shawn asked.
"I don't know what you're talking about." I stuttered.
"Didn't you make outrageous campaign promises you couldn't possibly deliver?" Shawn asked.
"Yeah, cause you told me too." I answered, reminding him.
"If I told you to jump off a bridge, would you listen to me?" He questioned, referring to the time I jumped off the miniature golf bridge to get his gold ball out of the lake.
"Yeah, I did that one time, don't you remember?" I admitted to the students.
"How can you possibly vote for a guy who's dumb enough to jump off a bridge?" Meece interrogated the students, bellowing his voice out in annoyance of our conversation.
"It was a miniature golf bridge. He jumped in to get my ball and don't call my friend dumb." Shawn warned him, getting in his face, protective of me.
"Yeah there's no room for a four-eyed, frog voiced geek." I remarked back at him.
"My mother does not buy my clothes!" Meece tried to shoot back, but he became flustered when he realized he revealed something that was off topic, but cost him his votes.
"I resign!" He screamed off the stage, only to say by the audience in a joking manner that he had a nice outfit on.
Meanwhile, Mr. Feeny called the debate off, saying everyone had to return to their classrooms in single file, and cast their votes as a result.
Shawn and I forgave each other after that.
"Anyway, I'm ditching this place. Do you want to go get a cheeseburger at Chubbie's, Jas?" Shawn asked her, and she smiled, taking a hold of his hand.
"I'd love to." She agreed to it.
However, Topanga turned out to be our last minute class president of the eighth grade. She promised us better food servings in the cafeteria, and to renew those textbooks for enjoyable purposes.
She was going to be a great female president.
:::
Shawn
"You know, Shawn," Jasmine started before we devoured into our food,"you would be a great president."
"Oh really?" I smirked, wrapping my arms around her waist, and settling her on top of my lap. She rubbed my chest with her hands, and wrapped her arms around my neck, securing our hold even more tighter.
"Yeah." She answered, pressing her lips against mine to kiss me. But it didn't matter to me anymore. What really mattered to me was being the boyfriend of Jasmine instead of acting as the president of the eighth grade.
Jasmine will always be my candidate.
