I Will Fight For You

Prologue

Some people think they have it all figured out - Who they are, what they want and where they’re going. Of course a majority of the time these are the people whose plans fall apart in the most unexpected way.

Now, I’m not saying I’m one of these people. At a certain time, I may have been on the way to turning into one though.

I didn’t have an easy childhood and some things change a person. You learn to keep things to yourself, to shut people away and find it hard to trust them.

What was the point in caring to be honest? It only leads to pain. When you love a person, it doesn’t matter the dynamic – be it a friend, a lover, a sibling, a parent or a child – you give them this power over you. You give them the power to hurt you whether it is intentional or not.

They hold a part of your heart and should they leave your life – voluntarily or not- it hurts. I speak with the voice of experience so it’s only logical to think that I was, am and will always be this way -always suspicious and untrusting of people – and it’s true… Up to an extent.

I’d been completely alone for a while and it was the worst part of my life. Everyone needs someone.

I know that this seems to contrast with what I said earlier. I never said humans were smart. If we were, we’d already have the hover cars that “Back to the Future” promised us and no one would have heartache. But as humans, most of us are ruled by our emotions.

I have a family. One person I consider my brother and he’s all the family I’ll ever need. The only person I needed to let in. Or so I thought.

Until I moved to a new town, met new people and bits of my past caught up to me. You can’t run from your past and you can’t avoid it. All you can do is face it and hope you have people on your side.

I did. Here’s my story. Here’s the story of how I learned to trust someone and how I learnt that the universe shoves your past at you at the most unexpected of times, sometimes for the best.

Here’s how I learned that there are some people worth fighting for.
