The mid-summer beach package, that comes with rolling waves that reflect, maybe even multiply the sun's brilliance; soft, refined sand that easily slides in between your toes; warm, enervating rays that bounce off of the skin and do miracles for the complexion; loose swimming trunks, sleek bikinis, floral print towels, icy bottles of beer, and tropical trees that dance loosely with the direction of the wind.

A perfect setting for an advertisement about ice cream, or powdered juice, or anything remotely tied to the summer, if the creators thought hard enough. What's left is a catchy song, dramatic swooning from the summer heat, a couple background dancers singing a ridiculous song about whatever the hell they were advertising, and a narrator speaking so flatteringly about the immediate freshness and relief the product would bring.

In the end, you were sure the ad would only come off as extra background noise, or a song that would get stuck in your head, quite mortifying if somebody would catch you humming it, really.

Or, if you were feeling the spirit, snap a picture, print it, edit in a huge, diagonal "Wish you were here!" in a brightly-colored, tacky font and add your own greetings with a below-average quality ballpoint pen found on the bedside table of your hotel room. Mail it, be done with the obligatory family shit and proceed to the real, without responsible adult supervision fun which would make for some great photos to flood your Facebook feed.

Although, sadly, you must confess you don't have an expensive camera slung around your neck, just an old phone gifted to you for your birthday two years prior. Nor did you have a key and a hotel number nor any cases of cold beer, or any rambunctious friends that tagged along.

What you did possess was a ratty towel, a change of clothes, a large bottle of sunscreen you bought at the nearest convenience store and some pocket money for when you or your boyfriend got hungry.

Gray's hand, loosely held against the curve of your back guided you to a spot that hadn't been claimed by the sea, or any other couples. Gray's complaining about the stifling heat but you choose to pay no mind to it, instead avoiding any pointed ends of seashells that jutted out of the mounds of sand. Your body's damp, not from the pristine, sparkling waves of the ocean but from a long-living sweat; you're more eager than ever to shed your crop top and denim shorts and dive right in, because anything was better than lingering at the suffocating heat trapped inside the walls of your house, where the most entertaining thing to do was lie in front of the noisy electric fan and subtract the hours until a much cooler, much more active nightfall.

Little children rush by, with boots of sand all the way up to their calves. Some are holding ice pops while others, young sadists, are chasing their friends or siblings with a wriggling crab in hand in a frenzy of laughs and horrified screams. Handfuls of couples, locals and foreigners alike, shrink under beach umbrellas, but just as many are splashing loudly in the waters, taking underwater pictures and emerging with red-rimmed, stinging eyes.

After setting down your things, forming a superficial crater in the sand, you realize Gray's seated himself beside your possessions, heaving a sigh of relief. His legs were splayed out in front of him, his toes wiggling and burying themselves in the sand. You giggle into the fresh, summer air, because you haven't even spread the towel out yet.
