Dinner is still a far, far time away, you tell yourself. You'd never get a chance to look at Levi for a while.

You don't remember doing anything wrong (the last thing you can remember is whistling the notes to a song you couldn't finish, and strolling about leaving your worries far, far behind you.) The ground was smooth, healthy even, getting under your fingernails and into the parts of your clothes that were the toughest to wash out. Pebbles were scattered out and about, looking as harmless as foraging ants when you dragged your eyes around them.

You don't remember doing anything wrong. Nothing mishandled, nobody misunderstood; it was the time between breakfast and lunch when everybody wondered if running in circles for a snack was worth it- lying on the dirt like a dead body was not worth it.

Neither was the pain crawling up your leg in slow minutes. Pain so fierce, one would expect a splatter of blood and a bloodcurdling shriek, something traumatizing. The most traumatizing things were the stares and the whispers and the hey, d'you see what happened?

Because nothing happened. Nothing besides the creeping pain and the distinct memory of nothing going wrong. You wished to never take another step again, to sit and slumber like a log for the rest of your life.

A bird takes off some ways from you, light blue, beak pointed straight ahead.

You didn't understand what it meant until you hear distant rumbles and curses and mumbling. A man's gruff voice could be heard, and the crowds parted like rolling waves. A man's strong arms curled around your body like a shell, picking you up wordlessly; down on both knees and then up on both feet in a split second. A man's gruff voice rumbled and cursed and mumbled in your ear, something like "What the fuck? What the fuck happened? You look like someone kicked you on your god damn chest, snap out of it!"

In a moment, you did.

A man had to be none other than Levi Ackerman, taking you into his arms and carrying you around like a bag of food rations (alas, as modest as rations go, they are much more important than what is said about them; a glimmer of hope for romance and a burning fire for the pain through your leg.)

"What the fuck happened?" Levi asked again, "Answer me."

"I don't know!"

"I saw you fall just like that, it wouldn't take much more to make you fall again, brat," he spat, "from all the commotion you gathered, it seemed as if you'd broken both of your legs."

Silence.

"They're not broken, are they?"

"Do the look broken?" you quipped, eyebrow raised.

Levi growls, and the way your body jolts on his arms was nothing short of a threat. Levi raises his own eyebrow, lips ticked in frustration. His normal expression, it would be difficult to get him to wear anything else.

"I could break them right now," he warns, except he only grips your form tighter as you bob up and down like a bloated animal down the sea of shameless onlookers. The infirmary isn't this far away, you tell yourself, hand hanging limp as you watch Levi try not to look at you; maybe you were wrong; maybe it was because one pair of legs carried the weight of two people this time.

Alas, Levi smells as fresh as morning, and you would have fallen soundly asleep if you weren't reminded of the pain blossoming around your foot. Dinner is still a far, far time away, you tell yourself. You'd never get a chance to look at Levi for a while.

You tug on his sleeve like a child, and his lips part just a little. "Aren't you going to get tired, Corporal?"

"Tired or not-" he jolts you up again, "-the only time I ever get a god damn break is when I'm dead."

Through thin blankets and thinner walls, you stare at your bare foot like it wasn't yours. The blankets smelled like detergent straight from street vendors and the girl who tended to you looked like dedication and poorly-paid hours. She gives you a glass of water like it's all you'll ever need and you drink it like it's riddled with poison.

Three drawn curtains away, Levi stands, knees bent and a single hand digging deep into his pocket, together with the girl who has nothing to offer but bashful smiles and whatever charm there is in knowledge in the books in the palm of your hand.

Levi asks about you as if you've suffered more than an awkward fall. "What happened to her?"

"No need to worry, it's nothing serious-"

"If it's not serious, then why can't you just fucking tell me already?" he snaps, and you feel a bit of remorse for the girl. Poor little girl, subject to Levi's anger.

"I'm sorry," Levi amends quickly, "I've been in the dark ever since I saw her take that fall, I'd just like an explanation anytime now."

"I understand," she all but whispers, "it's only a light ankle sprain. She must have twisted her ankle while walking over something she didn't previously notice." She gains confidence in her voice.

"Walking will be uncomfortable, and running is not adviseable. The ankle will come to swell but if you give it enough rest, she'll return to her regular schedule within the next week."

"That sounds good," he says, "thank you," he adds, gently.

Then, softer: "Thank God (Y/N)'s going to be okay soon."
