Abigail couldn't sleep well, and instead joined her parents at guarding the house and Abigail. Her father was asleep and her mother was guarding. Tonight everyone was worried and the tension was unbearable. It was the night where Merope planned to overtake Cirices.
Abigail's mother held something in her cupped hands and was staring into them. After Abigail sat down, she turned around to Abigail.
"They're coming. They'll be here in ten minutes. Wake your father."
"What?!", Abigail asked in surprise. "Have the bells rung yet?"
"No". Abigail's mother turned to her husband and woke him with a gentle tap.
"But how do you know?"
"You'll find out soon enough". Abigail's mother and father turned to her and her father spoke.
"We have planned for you to escape Cirices with Noctus. Do not ask. We want you to be free. We know you love the woods and forests."
"What so aren't you coming with me?"
"No", replied Abigail's mother gravely. "Your father and I have to fight to protect Cirices".
"I can fight too! Meropian children younger than me are fighting! I can wield a bow and arrow, I can flash with a sword, I can throw knives!!!"
"We are not like the cruel Meropians. We do not send children to war. And also, Cirices stands no chance! Merope's population is two times bigger than Cirices's! Everyone knows it! Even the mayor knows it!!", said her father.
Abigail's mother's hands appeared on her lap and opened, revealing a necklace. A wooden owl, painted with beautiful ear tufts, sat in her hands. The owl's eyes were closed. It was her mum's token, an owl.
"No!', I gasped. "I can't take it. It's your token."
"I give it to you, Abigail. In the most important times, this owl will be your saviour. This necklace has the power to summon real owls. If you need it, put the necklace in your cupped hands and blow on it. And, most importantly, do not give it to anyone else! Make sure it is around your neck unless you need to take it off. Only if you need to!"
Abigail's mother slipped the necklace over her head and clipped it up at the back. At that moment the bells rung, loud and clear over the 'sleeping' town. The sound of a large amount of people waking hit Abigail's ears. Her parents kissed her on the forehead and, with tears in their eyes, said goodbye. Abigail's father took off his coat and wrapped it around her shoulders.
"Good luck. Don't get injured or killed."
Abigail ran to the shed and pulled a pawing and neighing Noctus out. Tears in her eyes and with one last look at her parents, she swung onto Noctus and disappeared down the people filled street.
