I couldn't fall back asleep. I had tried countless times but... nothing.
I suspected that by now my mother would have wanted me home or at least to have heard from me, but my phone was dead. Just like I was going to be when I got home.
Suddenly, I remembered I had a spare charger in the dashboard of my car, so I went out and got it. Within minutes, my iPhone screen was illuminated and it opened up my lock screen. I opened the dialpad to phone my mother.
But I found myself dialing Hal instead.
Ring, ring. Ring, ring. Ring, ring. Rin-
"Hello? Luke?!"
"...Hal," I choked out, not knowing what to say next.
"Oh God, Luke-- I'm so sorry. I don't even know where to start... Wait, where are you?"
"A motel," I gave a phony cough. I felt like I was going to puke again.
"A what? A motel? Which motel?" Hal asked, she sounded like she had been crying.
"...the one off sixth and Broadway. Look, you were right about--"
"Which room?"
"I don't know, 27. Haleigha, look--" but she hung up. She fucking hung up.
I threw myself on the bed with all the might I had. I was finally tired again. And relieved. At least I had heard her voice again. That was all I needed to know she at least wasn't gone forever.
