It was taking me quite a while to process all that was happening to me. Luke was gone, my ride home was gone, my shoe was broken, Luke's phone was broken... I still was clutching the phone in my hand.
That's when I got an idea. I shouldn't just be sitting around here waiting for answers, I should be looking for them. That's when I decided I should try to call the unknown number and find some sort of answer as to why Luke disappeared.
The phone screen was cracked into a million bits, but the touch screen still seemed to work if you were willing to get your fingers cut up with glass. Luckily being Luke's best friend/girlfriend who knew almost everything about him, I knew his passcode.
5853, I typed in. I went to his recent calls and clicked the unknown caller ID. I placed the phone up to my ear as it rang. My stomach twisted and turned as I feared the news that awaited me on the other line. One ring. Two rings. Thr-
"Hello? Luke?" The girly voice picked up. I gulped. What was I going to say? I wasn't Luke, and I sure as hell couldn't talk like him.
"Who is this?" I decided to wing it and just ask.
"This is Talia. Who is this? You don't sound like Luke." It was Talia. The girl Luke had had sex with only a month ago. My heart felt as if it was being physically pulled out of my chest. And at this point I wanted to just take it and throw it out into the street before the moving cars.
Why a call from Talia made Luke leave me all alone at the club still left me completely puzzled. What had she said?
"Hello?" She asked and I realized I hadn't said anything back for a while. I was speechless. I couldn't find the right words to say to her. So, I just hung up. The fact that the unknown number had been Talia was enough for me. It was enough for me to know Luke had betrayed me for her and enough to assure me I was done with Luke. He had promised me he was done with her and that she was "a mistake." But now he was leaving me for her. I was starting to see who the real mistake was.
I let out a scream I had been holding in for quite a while and threw Luke's phone out into the street with all my strength. I didn't care about bringing it back to him now, he didn't deserve it.
My feet started to ache from standing barefoot on the cold cement and so I sat down. How was I going to get home now that I didn't have a ride? I couldn't call a cab because I had no money. I had left my purse in Luke's car. I couldn't really call anyone at all anyways because my phone was in my purse, too and Luke's was in the middle of the road where I had probably totaled it for good.
I let out a heavy sigh and squirmed within my dress that was beginning to feel extremely uncomfortable. I was not completely alone on these streets, but I defiantly didn't look like someone anyone would want to mess with right now. Judging faces passed me by as I tried to come up with a plan on how to get home.
I would have to get back into the club and find someone who would let me borrow their cellphone. And then, I would have to call my dad. At the very thought of this, a tear escaped my eye followed by a whole lot more until I was sobbing uncontrollably.
Just as I thought I wouldn't be able to stop, a car came speeding down the streets. It weaved all over the road and received some honks from a few drivers. I squinted through the blurriness my tears created to get a better look at the car, and without a doubt it was Luke's.
I jumped up from the curb and watched it recklessly park back into the same spot he had parked before. I stood still as I watched Luke's figure appear out of the car moments later. For a while he just stood there, too. He didn't see me, he was just... thinking. Then his actions became more aggressive and started to punch the sides of the car, letting out hollers of frustration in the process.
"Luke!" I yelled in the most angry tone I could manage. His head shot up in shock as he stopped in mid-punch.
"Hal!?" He screamed in surprise. We stood with a good thirty feet of distance between us before I began to march over to him.
"You are a fucking dick!" I called out and he backed up against the car as I approached him. "You are a fucking dick, and we are over! I know you were with Talia! "
"Hal, no!" He whined, "It's not what it looks like. I needed to take a drive to clear my mind, you don't understand!"
"Clear your mind my ass. What the fuck happened between you and Talia that made you leave me for her? And on our anniversary!" I squinted and tapped my foot impatiently.
"Look, Hal! You wouldn't understand. It's... Look, I can't tell you how stupid I feel!" Luke said as his voice cracked. I could tell by the sound in his voice that he was about to start crying, too. He ran both his hands through his hair, one after another. I could see how nervous he was. Something big had happened.
"Fucking tell me what happened or so help me god, Lucas!" I snarled through gritted teeth. Luke's eyes widened and he shook his head.
"Hal, please!" He cried as tears began to stream down his face in the light of the street lamps. "Please don't leave me, I need you!"
"Tell me," I repeated even more agitated.
"Hal!!" Luke screamed and fell to the ground on his knees. "I made a mistake, okay?! I made the biggest mistake of my life!" His tears wouldn't stop as he looked up at me with watery eyes full of guilt and regret. There was only one explanation for all of this. He had cheated on me with Talia.
"Just fucking say it, Luke!!" I demanded as I stepped away from him.
"The girl... The girl I had sex with a month ago..." He choked out through his sobs, "She's... pregnant..."
I didn't think it could've gotten any worse than Luke cheating on me.
But it just had.
