-Riley-

The light of the campfire glowed orange and flickered in Maya's eyes. The light from the flames caressed her soft face. Her eyebrows were pinched together and I could see the concentration on her face. She tightened the blanket around herself shivering in the cold, I felt my face heat up from the fire. I shifted my eyes to the fire and I watched the flames lick the logs leaving blackened wood and ash in their path of destruction. It was fascinating to watch how something that seemed so small could destroy something so much bigger. One of the boys threw his plate and cup in the fire and it caught immediately and the fire grew into the sky for a few seconds before retreating back to the logs. I looked back up to where Maya's chair was and I was confused, it was now empty. I stood up looking around for her but it was too dark. I shouted for her and the rest of the crowd got quiet. I dropped my blanket in the chair and walked to the edge of the crowd. In the distance walking toward the woods was a figure that seemed close to Maya's.

"MAYA!" I screamed, but the person just kept walking. I ran after them, the cold air burning my lungs as I sucked in each breath. My foot fell in a hole and I tripped, the person disappeared into the trees as I fell to the ground. My heart pounded in my chest and my ankle ached. I pulled my foot from the hole and pushed myself off the ground. It was eerily quiet, the crickets chirped and I could faintly hear the talk of the party. I rubbed circles into my ankle, I winced at the pain surging through my ankle to my foot. Suddenly the woods came alive with crickets chirping all together as loud as they could, then I heard it. It was a blood curdling scream, you could hear the fear in the voice. Chills ran down my spine and goosebumps decorated my skin like lights on a Christmas tree. I hopped to my feet and darted into the woods as fast as I could, jumping over downed trees and crunching the leaves underneath my feet. Even in the darkness of the woods I could see that there was a clearing up ahead. I stopped just before I reached the open field, I could see the drop off from where I stood. I could also see two people struggling, fear froze me in my spot like a deer in headlights. It was too dark to see exactly what was going on, the taller person looked like a girl, and if this was a fight, she was winning. The tall girl slammed the other to the ground and got on top, I saw a red glimmer from around the girls neck, "Blood..." I thought to myself the tall girl pulled something out of her pocket and it shimmered in the moon light, she held it in both hands and brought it down upon the other girl. Then she did it again, and again, over and over I lost count. I watched silently as the tall girl rolled the other off the cliff, as she turned around I saw her face. The blood drained from my face and my stomach felt sick. Grinning from ear to ear, rubbing her blade off on the grass, was Maya. I backed away slowly, I couldn't believe it, I stepped on a twig and it snapped. Maya's head perked up and I turned and ran as fast as I could. Tears stung my cheeks and blurred my eyes as I ran back to the field with the party. Everyone was still talking and laughing as if nothing had happened, well maybe to them they had no clue about anything. I reached the fire limping and sat in my chair,

"Where've you been Riley?" Lucas questioned me, tilting his head, and the lying game began,

"I ran to go see someone and I hurt my ankle then came back." He nodded and I downed a gulp of whatever was in the cup next to me, and the wind seemed to wrap itself around me and suffocate me in the cold. My thoughts drowned me as the party continued through the night.

The cops came to question me the next Monday, they knocked on my door and two of them asked me where I was at the party when the girl named Isadora Smackle disappeared. "Sirs, I was by the fire most of the night, then I thought I saw my friend go into the woods. I ran after her and I tripped in a hole before I reached the woods," I gestured to my boot cast, "Which is where I got this. After I fell I headed back to the fire and hung out the rest of the night. But it turns out my friend had been in her seat the whole time." I played with the end of my sleeve and the officers looked at me,

"Miss Matthews, who was your friend?" One of the officers pulled out a notepad and pen,

"Why? I told you she was just by the fire the whole time." I defended, the officers looked at each other,

"What was her name Riley?" The officer repeated sternly, I stuttered my answer,

"M-maya, Maya Hart. M-A-Y-A then H-A-R-T." the officer jotted down her name, "Have you interviewed her yet?" I questioned and they nodded,

"Yep, same story you gave us," they stood up from their chairs and headed to the door, the reached the door and turned back, "Except for we have a witness that says both of you went into the woods, and you seemed like a different person when you came out. But we will find out the truth, have a good day Miss Matthews!" The door shut behind them and I sunk into my chair. The tears fell with sobs, each tear was like a shockwave in an earthquake that was leaving my life in pieces. In that moment I felt my heart fall from my chest and to the ground, I watched it shatter on the ground breaking into a million pieces I had no hope of putting back together.

I had tried to avoid Maya and the fear of the cops, but despite my efforts they stayed fresh in my mind. It had been another week before they found her body down the creek. Everyone was asking me about the party now, how crazy it was I was at the same place where the girl died. I told them it was crazy, and as I lied to them about what I knew I felt guilt creep up on my mind.

"Hannah! Hey I have to talk to you!" Her voice froze me, I turned around to look at her. The grin on her face was soft, nothing like the one she wore after she killed Isadora.

"Hey what's up Maya?" I nervously chuckled, trying to pretend everything was okay,

"Not much, just meet me at my house after your shift tonight, I wanna hang out. It's almost Halloween and we haven't done our scary movie marathon! Bring your onesie!" She gave me a quick side hug and ran off. I didn't want her to think I knew, so I decided to go. After I got off work I drove over to her house, it used to seem so warm and inviting, now it seemed cold and scary. It was as if the house had been abandoned by the best friend I knew, and had been replaced by a creepy neighbor. I took a shaky breath and got out of my car. I felt my hands shake and I put them in the pockets of my leather jacket. Knocking on her door with my cast, it opened almost immediately. Maya greeted me with a hug, pulling me inside and to the couch she was already dressed in her unicorn onesie.

3 movies in and she cuddled up to my side, SAW played in the background as I focused on my thoughts. I didn't know what to do, I was cuddling on the couch with a killer.

"Did you see anything at the party?" Maya questioned casually, I felt my heart race,

"No did you?" She shook her head and looked at me, I could feel my cheeks heat up. She moved on top of me, "What are you doing Maya?" I questioned shakily, she grabbed my face,

"Something I've wanted to do since the party." She leaned her head in as if she was going to kiss me, I tried to push her off but she over powered me and put my hands behind my head. With one hand she rendered me useless and with the other she pulled a knife out of her pouch. "You know what Riley? I was just starting to think of how great you were, but you know I don't like liars," She pressed the knife against my throat and I swallowed hard, "I know you saw me kill Isadora. I watched the fear on your face when you snapped that twig, honestly it was almost flattering that you could be that scared of me. But then the cops came back, you sent the cops on my trail and I can't have that now can I. Because see Riley, I'm gonna kill everyone in this pathetic little town one by one, watch the life drain from their bodies. Isadora was strong, she fought back, but she wasn't as strong as me. You? You're simply pathetic!" She cackled, teasing the knife down my neck to my collarbone, "Anyway, I suppose I should get to-" She was cut off by police sirens, her eyes became frantic and she narrowed her eyes at me. "You brought them here! I'm gonna kill you and then they will never find me again! Have fun with a knife in your heart!" With one last deep breath she plunged the knife into my chest, it happened in slow motion. I heard the door bust open as everything faded to black, the pain in my chest was sharp and I couldn't keep my eyes open. I heard a gun fire three times and hit something like flesh. Then with that, the lie ended with me.
