The walk back was long

The walk back was long. Kyle had to keep walking over giant trees and puddles.

"So, where are you from?"

He asked after a couple minutes of silence. It took me a couple minuets to think about the words and try to translate them and find a lie I could say.

Merfolk had their own language they spoke. My tribe practiced English in school; just in case someone ran into a human.

I could speak English, but I was rusty after a hundred plus years.

"I-I'm not from this country...?"

I spoke quietly after an awkward few minuet. I mentally reprimanded myself when it came out more like a question than a statement. Thankfully, Kyle just nodded his head.

I could not deny this man was handsome. He was tall, strong, and had amazing sharp features.

But he was not my mate.

A sad sigh escaped me at the thought, catching his attention.

"You okay? We are almost there. Just past these trees."

He told me. I nodded and closed my eyes trying to block out the throbbing pains in my body.

"Do you know how you got up here? We're a long way from the next town over."

He said. Fear ranked through my body at trying to find an explanation. It was forbidden to tell a human about our existence, expect if you happen to be mates.

This man was not my mate.

I opted for the next best solution, a lie.

"I was on a boat when the storm hit. Last thing I remember was getting caught in it. Something carried by the wind hit my head and I passed out."

I said pointing at the gash I felt on my forehead. He nodded with obvious sympathy.

"That must have been scary, it's hurricane season here. This was one of the biggest yet, category 4."

He said, making me nod. I had only heard of hurricanes in stories told at school, some caused my angry mermaids- others by nature. I never went close enough to the surface for them to concern me. The most they did was scare our food away and chill the waters a bit.

Sometimes a boat sunk, and we would go explore it, but that was a rare occurrence. My parents said back a few hundred years ago boats sunk all the time. They were wooden back then, nowadays it is all metal.

I was knocked out of my thoughts at Kyle announcing we made it to his small town.

I looked up and saw houses and small shops everywhere. I was in awe at how humans lived.

"Wow...."

I said not bothering to hide my amazement. He chuckled at my reaction.

"What? It is nothing honestly. Have you been to the city yet?"

He asked me, walking onto hard black ground. I just shook my head at his question. I had no idea what a city was. As I was thinking about what a city was, I remembered my important question.

"Uh... is their water around?"

I asked him, making his eyebrow lift.

"Water? Like to drink?"

He said. I shook my head no.

"No, like big water!"

I said hoping he got what I was trying to say.

"Oh, like a body of water? There's a few lakes and the ocean are just a few miles away."

He said. At the mention of the ocean- my eyes lit up.

"Yes! Ocean, I need you to take me there!"

I said happy of the thought of going home. He just chuckled at me.

"It's all messed up after the storm, usually you have to wait a few days, maybe even weeks!"

He told me walking towards this giant, what I am assuming is a human home.

I frowned at him.

"No! It's okay, my home is...near the ocean!"

I said, hoping he would take me. I guess he saw my obvious distress and sighed.

"Okay, let us see what the doctor says about your leg, get some food in you, and some rest. Then we'll talk about going to the beach."

He said. I nodded, even if I had to fake being okay, I would make sure I got to the ocean.

When we got to the giant human home many people were there. They all stared at us making me highly uncomfortable. I flinched into Kyle making him chuckle.

"It's okay Aquarius, these are my... family! They are all genuinely nice and are just concerned about you. They won't bite."

At the mention of biting I looked at him in fear making him full blown laugh. Some people around started to chuckle as well, making me calm down a lot.

Most were minding their own business trying to clean up the mess the storm made.

I guess they were okay.

Humans did not seem so scary as merfolk made them out the be. The only humans that truly scared me were fishermen with their hooks and nets. Now those were killers!

Kyle kept walking towards the home, I had just happened to turn around and jumped when I saw the furry creature that was in the woods! It growled at me making me scream and fall out of Kyles arms.

Now everyone was looking at me.

I watched as it came closer, still growling making me scurry away on my butt.

"Hey! Aquarius do not worry! He is trained! I promise he won't bite."

At that the creature turned to him and gave him a big growl too.

Water fell from my eyes again and I felt a panic attack coming.

I did not want to be eaten!

I started to shake making Kyle look at me in concern. He walked towards me making the creature growl and bark.

"Stop it! You are scaring him! I'm just trying to help him!"

He yelled like the creature could understand, I am mean does not he realize I am just food to him?!

I started to get dizzy when a terrifying voiced boomed out-

"What's going on?!"
