▬▬▬▬Marley’s POV▬▬▬▬

The sound of my bull terrier barking woke me up. It was still dark out, and the moonlight spilling through my bedroom window made me wonder what time it was. Squinting at my bedside clock, I closed my eyes in frustration.

“Four in the morning? Are you kidding me?”

Arf! Arf!

“Spud!” I shouted, reluctantly sitting up in bed. The cool air of the morning raised goosebumps on my naked skin, and the soreness between my legs quickly reminded me of what I’d done last night, or rather, who I’d done.

Turning around, I frowned at the empty spot next to me, the sheets all displaced and ruffled.

Where did he go?

Standing up, I grabbed my white and periwinkle striped sheet. Wrapping it around my body, I tucked it under my arms and walked out the room, the pads of my feet moving against the old hardwood floors.

Arf! Arf!

“Goddammit, Spud!” I shouted, rubbing my head as I entered the living room. “Why are you-Oh…”

Well...there he is.

My eyes ran up the length of Joel, who was fumbling with the lock of my front door. His shirt was on backwards, his dark hair was dishevelled, and his pants were still unbuckled. Honestly, he looked like a man fleeing the house of the married woman he was having an affair with when he found out the scorned husband had returned.

“Marley, hey,” he sheepishly smiled, his eyes raking over my body, knowing I was completely bare underneath. “I was just-”

“Fleeing the scene?”

“What? No. Well...not exactly. I-”

Arf! Arf!

“Spud, knock it off!” Snapping my finger and pointing him toward my room, I ordered, “Go!”

Whimpering, he stuck his tail between his legs and ran off, like a blur of white in my morning vision.. Rubbing my eyes, still not fully awake, I noticed Joel hadn’t moved.

“You can go, too. It’s not your fault I’m a dumbass that believed you would actually stick around,” I sighed.

“It’s not like that, Marley,” he insisted, walking over to me. “I had to go and didn’t want to wake you.”

“Like hell that’s the truth.”

Waving one hand in frustrated surrender, I turned to walk away from him. I should have played this smarter, yet, I didn’t. But, I’m a grown woman and I’m not going to cry over something like this. I mean, did it suck to feel lied to and used? Yes. But hey, at least the sex was good and I didn’t have to fake an orgasm.

This was me trying to look on the bright side of things. It made it easier not to lash out at the man still lingering in my house.

Looking over my shoulder, I questioned, “Why are you still here?!”

“Because,” he started, gripping my shoulders and pulling me close, forcing me to hear him. “It’s not like that. If I didn’t have other responsibilities, I fucking promise, I would still be in your bed, wondering what way I should wake you up.” The suggestive tone in his voice did not go unnoticed by me, and I clamped my legs tightly closed. “Believe me, Marley, I want to stay...but, I have to get back to Everly. She has school today and-”
