"Attention! May I have your attention, please?"

My father proclaimed when we entered the ballroom and when the chatter went quiet as all heads turned to him, he continued, raising his glass of champagne.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I'm delightful to announce you that my beautiful daughter, Brienne, and dear Diego here—" He pointed the glass towards us. "—are now engaged as they decided to start a new family together."

Did he say WE decided?! As in, Diego and I decided?! What was wrong with this man!? The only thing I decided was to punch their heads flat.

Suddenly, Diego turned to face me as he reached to his pocket and took out a small black velvet ring box.

My breathing hitched when he opened it and I found there a rose-gold rope-band engagement ring. I couldn't blame him for taking my breath away - if you could see the ring you'd understand.

The design was an amazing example of vintage flare all wrapped up in a whirlwind of love, elegance, sophistication and brilliant shine. Its oval center diamond, and the rope band itself, was surrounded around by small diamonds and made the oval diamond seem even bigger than it already was.

Diego took the ring out and slid it onto my ring finger. It fitted perfectly for my thin fingers so it shocked me even more. But then he probably got my measurements from my mother.

Suddenly, he leaned down to me and nearly gave me a heart attack as I thought he was going to kiss me. But instead, he grabbed me by my waist and pulled me sideways, closer to him and whispered into my ear: "It's my mother's ring so take care of it, for now."

Then he straightened back, however his hand stayed on my waist as he smiled at people and enjoyed the attention and their cheering while I stood there, probably gawking at him while my heart was running a marathon.

So apparently his mother thought this marriage was a real thing, why else would she give me her ring, which probably ran in her family for generations, and greeted me so warmly?

Soon, people started coming one by one, congratulating us for our engagement, telling us how we're a perfect match for each other. I didn't know haft of those people and I felt so uncomfortable and my heart sank low just thinking about what happened this night.
