I reached suprisingly fast the top of the hill and the sun just started to rise when I reached the tree.
Only to find the baby already death, I picked up the small lifeless bundle and couldn't help to cry over the unknow baby I pressed now to mine chest and cradling it.
"I'm so sorry," I muttered against the head. "I'm so, so sorry you poor child," a tear fell on the red hat he or she was wearing.
I didn't know how long I sat there but I heared footsteps coming up to me. "Mo Ghràdh," I heared Jamie's voice saying but I didn't response. He stood akwardly for awhile before I spoke.
"I came up here," I sobbed. "In hope to save the baby, but I was to late Jamie, to late, they let him die here,"
Jamie looked around and nodded. "Aye," he spoke. "Ah ken," he bended infront of me. "Ye hae a kind heart Greer, bit ye hae na idea whit ye'r dealing wi'," He holded out his hands and nodded reassuring to me. "Show," I struggled to let the bundle go but Jamie kind of wurmed his hands in mine arm. "Came."
I gave him the baby and he looked at me and at it, before he stood up and walked to the tree again.
"Bin keekin a' ower fur ye," he said from behind me, I couldn't bear to turn around to see Jamie putting the innocent baby back. "Ah met Geillis oan th' road. She tellt me whaur yer," he walked back to me. "Tis dangerous tae be oot 'ere alone. Mo ghràdh,"
"Please tell me you don't believe in this bullshit of Changelings and Fairies," I spoke still with a hint of grieve in mine voice.
"Tis nae whit ah believe," he sat down next to me again but I turned mine face away. "Bit this fowk, they've ne'er bin further than a days walk fae whaur thay whaur born, thay hear na mair o' th' world than whit th' faither tolds thaim in th' kirk oan sunday." he explained. "Fur th' parents o' this bairn, tis th' changeling that died, that wull comfort thaim a bit,"
But it didn't comfort me. It was a real human baby. Jamie saw that and he took mine hand.
"Take me home Jamie," I begged and he helped me up and guided me towards his horse.Back in Leoch, Jamie showed me the letter Ned had written for him but mine mind couldn't help but wonder to the baby in the forest. Jamie noticed and stood up. Walking towards the door, which he opened, he gave a small order in Gaelic to a maiden who happend just to past by and walked back in.
"Ye have to sign it Greer, just below mine," he said as he stood behind me, laying his hands on mine tense shoulders.
I looked at the paper a bit hesitate, it was meant for the Duke which I didn't trust as far as I could threw mine shoe.
"Ah ken ye hae th' doubts obout Sandringham. Weel, ah dinnae quaistion his truth, juist gie it a try Greer, fur oor future," he gave a small linch in mine shoulders and than handed me the quill. "Fur Lallybroch,"
I took the quill and signed just under his name: Greer Madeleine Fraser.
Jamie looked at it and smiled. "Madeleine," he tried mine middle name and I nodded. It was mine true middle name, named after mine grandmother from mine mother's side. "It's French," he noticed.
"I know," the door opened and two chamberboys and two maidens walked in. In between the boys was a wooden bathtub and I smiled at the idea of taking finally a proper bath.
The girls quickly filled the tub as one of the boys lit the fire under it. They gave a small bow and left without a word.
Jamie walked towards the table where the toiletries stood and took a bottle of Rose oil and threw in a large amount so the room smelled like it.
"How did you know?" I asked in suprise. "How did you know I needed this?"
"Ah ken ye," he smiled and then helped me up. "Came here," he slowly started to undress me, nothin sexual this time. When I was completely naked I let myself sink in to the warm water and letted out a moan as mine muscles relaxed finally after a tense day and night.
"Would you join me?" I asked with a smile towards mine husband who just picked up waterjug.
He hesitated a bit and than stripped out of his clothing as well, I moved forward a bit so he could sit behind me, pressing me thight against his hard chest, he started to massage mine neck and after that mine head as he washed mine hair.
I felt mine eyes close as he did that and I leaned back, placing mine head in the indentation between his neck and shoulder.
He smiled as he placed a kiss on my freshly washed hair and kept his hands moving over mine arms as I felt into a peaceful sleep.I woke up as somebody picked me up out of the cold water. I opened one eye and I saw it was Jamie who skillfully draped a towel over mine naked body while still caring me.
He walked towards the bed and laid me down. With soft hands he dried me off to then place a blanket over me.
"Mise Dia, dè a rinn mi gus a ’bhean sin a thoirt a-mach às do làimh?*" I heared him mutter in Gaelic. "Feuch an dìon thu i bho chron sam bith, glèidheadh i bho chunnart sam bith, mar a tha gaol agam air a ’bhean seo le cridhe mo tholl ,*" he pressed a kiss on mine forehead and I stirred a bit. "Sleep well Mo Ghràdh, tha gaol agam ort,**" he whispered and with that he softly left the room and I fall into a deep sleep again.Translation -this is done by google translate so sorry any Gaelic People if it isn't right- :
*Mine God, what did I do to deserve such woman out of your hand? Protect her from harm, keep her save from any danger, as I love this woman with mine whole heart.
** My love, I love you.Small a/n on the side:
Mo Ghràdh is now the nickname for Greer by Jamie, since Sassenach means English and well Greer is Dutch so it doesn't fit that well😉
