** Task - Hidden Muttations **

I had missed who died last night. Niles told me there were 6 faces in the sky though when we had swapped. He told me that it wasn't important. I told him that every life was important, that's what made us human. He said shut up. It was past midnight. The moon was high up in the sky as Niles and I sat, hidden in the bushes that surrounded the Cornocopia clearing. I was shivering so badly but at least we had a sleeping bag. I had already slept, now Niles was softly dozing. I kept watch, rotating my head like I had to in District 7. Watching for the wolves. That was what this was like, except I know that the wolves - tributes - are coming. They will always be coming, until the very last one. I moved my head slowly to the right, scanning for any movements. Niles said to wake him up if anything look suspicious - that means out of the ordinary, I didn't know that. Something caught my eye, black hair and a familiar appearance, as well as another person. I sighed. It was Aaron and his friend. They were probably the same as me and Niles - getting weapons. I turned back the other direction and back again then Aaron was gone. Gone. I don't know where, I hadn't even turned for that long. A canon boomed in the distance. One less person to stop me from getting home. I rubbed my silver coin in my hand. To make way for life, there must be death.

"Hi," a voice made me jump. I almost squealed but stopped myself - screaming is for girls.
"Hi Aaron," I smiled, turning away from the Cornocopia. I woke up Niles, his eyes went wide at first but then settled, "Do you want to be our friends?" I asked, his face twisted into a smile, it looked funny. Niles and I got out of the sleeping bag. I knew Aaron, I knew he was safe. I just trusted him for some reason.
"I guess,"
"Niles?" the other boy said. He was very quiet. He seemed to look very lost and out of place, but don't all of us. Another booming of a canon made us all jump.
"Yeah," Niles said with his usual grumpy voice, I don't think he noticed the canon.
"I need to talk to you," I barely heard him, "Alone," he said that part louder. Niles looked at me, to Aaron, then to the other boy and back to me,
"You'll be fine?"
"Yes. I'm 13 for God's sakes," I huffed. Niles and the other boy walked away and stopped just out of view,
"So what did you want?" I asked, sitting down on the ground,
"Well, you know how I asked you if you remembered me?" he sat down too,
"Yeah, and I thought you were a creep," I replied. I was wondering why he came all this way just to see me. I felt special, in a way,
"Okay, I'll just say it. I think - no, I am - your brother, half brother," he played with his fingers nervously. I felt like I was frozen. I have another brother. An older brother. Why wouldn't Dad tell me? Now that he metioned it, I remember being in a District where cows were. But we have cows in 7, for milking only.
"Tessa, are you okay?" Aaron reached out to me but I pulled away. It could be a lie.
"I'm fine," I mumbled. I looked into his eyes. They looked sad, hurt and tortured all in one go. I hated seeing family - if he was family - hurt. I did the same thing I would do for anyone in my family if they were this way. I hugged him. He went stiff at first, then he slowly wrapped his arms around me. I don't think that he has ever hugged someone before. I could see Niles and the other boy coming back.
"What's going on?" Niles asked,
"Aaron is my brother," I pulled out of the hug and stood up,
"That's weird," he laughed, "Zane is my brother," That really is weird. But we are like one big family. It is funny how we all chose to be friends, now we can always be together. I was the first to spot the silver thing. I recognised it from other Hunger Games shows,
"Look, a parachute!" I said loudly,
"Tessa!" Niles hissed, "The Careers aren't far away,"
I pointed - quietly - to the parachute. It was gold instead of silver, but that must mean that it is very special. It stopped on the snowy ground. I ran to pick it up. I ripped open the box and inside was a smaller one. Then we heard screaming. I fell to the ground. I covered my ears and closed me eyes, it reminded me of Mum before she died. Her screams as Rohan was born, but she continued to scream afterwards too. Someone was pulling me hands from my ears.
"Tessa! It's fine now, the screaming's gone," someone said, they had my arms by my side,
"I don't want to be here," I cried, "I don't want to die!"
"Shhh," one of the boys said, "You'll make it out. I promise."
"But I don't want to leave any of you. I want us to stay together. Always," I was still crying. I opened my eyes and saw Aaron beside me. I cuddled him. He would always protect me. That's what older brothers do, right? We could all be together. Always. I didn't listen to the boys after that. They were deep in conversation. I heard the Careers mentioned. I pushed myself off Aaron and opened the small box, inside lay a small silver ball. I wonder what it could be, a special weapon maybe.
"What is that?" Aaron asked, looking over my shoulder,
"How should I know?" I shot back, "Maybe we should throw it at someone,"
"No. That could be dangerous," Niles said, so instead of throwing it, I picked it up between my thumb and forefinger. I screamed as it pinched my skin, it felt as if I was being stabbed. The boys' jumped back from me.
"Get it off! Get it off!" I yelled running around. It was hurting. Hurting my finger so much. Tears ran down my face for the second time that day. It was hurting so badly.
"Help!" I screamed. I started to fell dizzy. I swayed and fell onto the snowy ground. It was cold down here. I started giggling, the dizziness and the pain made everything look and feel funny. Everything I could see start swirling around like water in a bucket. I started to feel sick.
"Tessa! Tessa!" a voice sounded far away, and it echoed through my body, "Run Tessa!"
I stood up and started running, I quickly fell onto the fuzzy snow again. I crawled, anywhere. I had to run. Suddenly my mother was in front of me.
"Tessa, you have to go. You have to fight," she was blocking my path. I turned back, my vision swirled again. Careers. The one who almost killed me was leading.
"You bitch!" I cursed. I lunged at her, even though I was dizzy. I smashed into her legs.
"Get off me!" she yelled, her voice sounded odd. I wrapped my hands around her throat. Kill. No one hurts my brother. She pushed me off her and pinned me to the ground.
"Tessa!" a voice called. I ignored it and focused on killing her. A knife lay on the ground. I picked it up and lunged again. A booming sounded again. Did I kill the girl?
"Tessa!" the voice sounded angry. I was dangling in the air. Someone was holding me. The girl was gone. Niles was in front of me, motionless. What happened? I turned around and screamed as the mutts lunged at me. They were small - like mini wolves. I hated wolves. I could do it though. Small wolves are better than big ones. I batted them away. They clawed at my skin and my eyes. No matter how hard I thrashed my arms, they stayed on. I rolled around, swiping my face for them to get off. I gave up. I let them consume me. I shut my eyes. I could never get out of here - it was the Hunger Games. I knew I'd never make it out. Why should I try? I opened my eyes and everything was gone. I wasn't in the forest. I was in a white room. Me and Aaron. I thought he was dead. I could see myself, like I wasn't in my body. I was just watching myself move towards Aaron, then I noticed the red stuff - blood - splattering out as my body stabbed him. I screamed but I couldn't hear myself, it was a silent scream. Aaron slumped to the ground. Everything went black. Nothing. Just black. I opened my eyes, even though I didn't rememeber closing them. I sat up, rubbing my head and my hand. I looked around. I was back in the arena, surrounded my trees. I was in a small snowy clearing, it made me feel funny. Footsteps were in the snow - probably mine - and the rest was peaceful. No harm done. Where was Aaron? Where was Niles and the other kid? I had to know. I stood up but plonked back down, my head was way too sore. My arm was ripped to shreds. The mutts probably. I put it in the ice to numb it. Clara taught me that. Then I noticed a small sound. It sounded like groaning. I looked to the direction it was coming from. Aaron lay on the ground, unmoving. His chest wasn't moving, he wasn't breathing. I tryed to move but my body was exhausted. I don't know from what. But right now three things were running through my head.
1. I needed to find everyone. It was weird because as I thought it, a canon went off.
2. I prayed to God that Aaron was alive. Then, another canon.
I knew the last one was definitely true.
3. Panem, you messed with the wrong girl. It did a final 6th boom. The arena was now in silence.
