** Task - The Interviews **

I paced up and down in my room. Being District 1, we were on the first floor so I didn't have much of a view. I was wearing a dark navy suit, it was making me itch. My stupid stylist said that 'it would look glorious and match my eyes'. I disagree. No wonder my brother didn't want to go through with this, all the Capitol were pin brains - all dumb and they think this is the only thing that goes on in the world. I have news for you - other things happen! Of course, I couldn't say my thoughts aloud - I had to keep up my act, that's how I would win. Stick with the Careers, act like one - cruel and vicious - then I'd show them how smart I was. I mean, that whole act with the girl from my District - Phae - I think is completely fake. Maybe the majority would believe it, but I've seen this girl before. I've trained with her. She's not some stupid ditzy blonde, she's probably a genius for all I know, but she's definitey not dumb.

"Ready Tyber?" Phae called from outside my door,
"Coming," I replied. The interviews were in less than thirty minutes. I had time to prepare - had time to make sure no one would see through my facade. I opened the door and my mouth dropped open. I quickly snapped it shut. Her face seemed to sparkle at me, her beautiful blonde hair - honey blonde she kept telling me - looked a silky as the bed sheets in the room.
"Done staring," she smirked. I mentally slapped myself - don't be fooled by this girl,
"Can't miss a beautful girl like you," I said flirtatiously, making her blush, "You could have left without me,"
"Well....you know, I thought..." she stammered nervously. Gotcha!
"We could walk down together. As a team," I suggested. Once I made friends with Phae, my plan was to kill her first. As far as I was concerned - she was a huge threat to me.
"Yeah. I thought you'd want that," she smiled sweetly. We walked together until our escort - Betrius - met us at the elevator.
"All the Careers do well with sponsors, so be what a Career is meant to be, yes?" he said. I had learnt early on that being a Career had it's downs. The escort and mentors were always on our tails, watching what we eat, who we talk to and what we're saying. Didn't they I know I had already figured out my game plan? Thankfully the elevator ride was short - since we are only on the first floor - but the awkward silence was killing me. Organisers got all the tributes lined up, Phae would be the first to go, then myself, then the girl behind me - she was the daughter of Enobaria. She was only 12, she'd be too easy to kill. Next was a boy called Eden, he was really tall - in fact I was the smallest out of him and Phae - but I liked him, he had a quiet personality. He would be a threat though, maybe I'd have to take him out before Phae - I'd need her help with him. I hadn't met with the District 4's yet, I'm sure I would if they decided to stay with us in the arena, but if they don't I wouldn't care. Everyone has to die anyway. It makes me thoughtful about why the Capitol would waste so many children, surely the hope of a rebellion is over now..... It suddenly went dark backstage and the lights out front came on. I could here the host - Ruby Shimmer - warming up the crowd. It would be a good laugh to see everyone disappoint them.
"Now, let's welcome our first tribute: Phaedra Wolfgang!" she beamed with excitement. I think Ruby was the reason I described the Capitol people as 'as shallow as paddle pools'. I think if I said that though, it definitely would not help my cause. I waited for the usual two minutes. Occasionally I heard Phae's musical laugh - well there was nothing special about it. My mentor Obsidon had drummed it into me that the Capitol love funny tributes.
"Make them laugh but be serious about the Games," he had said earlier.
"Give a round of applause to Phae Wolfgang! Our first tribute for the year!" Ruby beamed again. Her voice was surprisingly loud, but had a melodic sound to it. Phae walked past me and gave me a wink.
"Good luck, charming," she smiled,
"Don't need it," I said, returning a wink. Damn, this girl had me on my toes.
"Now for our first gentleman, Tiberius Mitango!" she said. I took a deep breath and put a huge smile on and walked out into the bright lights. I bowed and then took a seat, Ruby sat opposite me but we were on a 45 degree angle - so the crowd could see us.
"Now, Tiberius," she began,
"Please," I laughed, leaning back into my seat, "Call me Tyber,"
"Oh," she giggle, looking to the crowd, "Getting a bit personal, are we?" The crowd laughed.
"Everything's personal Ruby," I said cheekily. I knew I could get away with having a banter with her.
"I think Tyber has had a bit too much wine," she said, the crowd laughed again, "That brings me to the question, how are you liking the Capitol?" she asked more seriously,
"I'm loving it, once I win, I'm thinking of moving here," I smiled,
"Well, the Capitol is the best,"
"I especially loved the beds," I added, making the crowd laugh again,
"The beds?"
"Yes, they're good for all sorts of things," I winked at Ruby making the Capitol laugh harder,
"Tyber," Ruby said, looking shocked, then waited for the crowd to calm, "Would you mind telling us why you volunteered?"
"I've been waiting for this moment, Ruby. I want that fame and glory. And I have the beautiful young lady that came here with me, Phae," I found the camera and winked into it. The Capitol should love that.
"Can I detect a hint of romance there?" Ruby said jokingly, "Who stands out to you this year?" she asked,
"Definitely the District 6 tribute," I said. That was truth, no lies there.
"Why is that?" she asked curiously,
"When you have volunteers from Districts that haven't won many Games, they're always someone to watch, especially if they are older. They had no reason to volunteer, except for the fun of it," I said. I hope that sounded like a Career. Careers obviously have to be vicious, but I think actual me came out in that answer.
"Are they your biggest threat?" she raised an eyebrow. The Capitol crowd were silent, they were listening in amazement I think, I guess they think I can only be funny. I laughed at Ruby's question.
"No," I laughed,
"Who is?"
"I think that's a secret," I smiled, "But obviously my fellow Career's are."
"Who is the weakest tribute?"
"All of them," I grinned - my Carrer act was back, "I just have to get my hands on them. I really can't wait for the killing to start," I added to sound a little bloodthirsty,"
"Someone's rearing to go," Ruby said to the crowd, "Now just one last question before you go, do you have a chance of winning?"
"I don't just have a chance," I laughed, "I'll see you back here in a week or two," Cocky was what I need to fool the others.
"Good luck. And now, let's give a huge round of applause to Tyber Mitango!" she shouted. The crowd clapped wildly and cheered for me. I bowed and walked off stage to Phae - who was leaning against the wall in front of the screen.
"I'm a threat, am I?" she smirked, playing with her hair. Talk about a flirt. I decided to give it back to her.
"Anyone as sexy as you is. So I think you're the only one," I flirted and walked away, "But don't think I know your secret," I whispered to myself.
